What are the best ways to practice photography skills outside of an online course?

The best way to upskill your photography skills is to be consistent. Try shooting frames here and there. Edit and Color grade them. Show them to skilled people and ask for their reviews about it. Learn from you mistakes and keep trying. The more you shoot, the more you learn. So, keep going until there comes a time when you already have the final edited perspective of the picture in your mind even before you capture it. Once you reach that level, Congratulations, you’re now a pro. ?

The best way to practice photography is to carry a camera with you wherever you go! Even if it's a phone, take it to the mailbox, the drive to the grocery store, the local coffee shop, wherever! Carry it with you all the time and you'll find yourself looking at the world through the perspective of "what's something that I see that's interesting?" The more you shoot the more you'll learn what you don't like, which will lead to shooting more of what you do like, and that develops a style over time.

Take photos of anything you have interest in: Children, flowers, leaves, golf, cars, peppercorns, apples, the moon, water, your feet. It does not matter what it is. In fact it does not need to be a thing but an idea: Sunrises, sunsets, street photography, how to show the passage of time, the way coffee or tea looks when cream is poured in etc. Just make sure it is something you like.

A great way to buff up creative skills is to experiment. Take an idea–no matter how small–and try it. Then add to that experiment another ingredient. See how it feels. Now a third. This doesn't need to take a lot of time and soon enough you've made, and iterated on a new idea. This is what it's all about.

My close friend and I started a group at my studio 20 years ago. We meet monthly (mostly) and share wisdom, images, and wine. We often critique each other’s work or offer solutions to vexing problems. People in the group range from 20’s to 80’s and practice many genres.

A local camera club is the best way to grow your photography. I started by becoming a member and learning from peers. Every month was a photo assignment that helped me learn from competing photographers. I eventually became a trusted photo judge and then the president of the camera club. I’ve been a professional photographer now for 40 years.

At my university, we have a photography club where members come together and go on walks around the city or join in workshops. This is a place where everyone is welcome, from professional photographers to members with their phone! It’s an inclusive and great way to meet like minded individuals and grow skillsets together!

Join your local community, go on outing and workshop with them. You will make lots of like minded friends and before you know it, you have improved. Win win!

Many people get stuck on the 'M' mode, having to shoot in manual. Sadly this puts off many new photographers and I disagree with this strategy. I suggest you first choose what type of photography you want to do, be it landscapes, birds, sports, flowers, nightlife, etc and then find out what modes your camera has that suits your chosen genre. Take lots of photos in that mode, getting used to the feel of your camera and, hopefully, starting to feel happy with the shots you're taking. Then, when you find some really good shots in that mode, start looking at the properties of those photos, the shutter speed, ISO, aperture, zoom length and, if you wish, move to Manual mode, then replicate those settings and see how it goes. But don't rush it.

The best way is to experiment and practice. If it's not what you like, do small changes and take a shot. Start at the basic setting because it's the foundation. Once you're good at it, you adjust accordingly to what you think is a good shot to your style. The more you do, the better you'll know what settings to use in different situations.

Experiment, know your camera. Change settings, play with the aperture, ISO, shutter speed. Take multiple shots with different settings.

Don’t be afraid to get out of the auto mode! It’ll give you so much more control over your creative vision. You can use Aperture or “A” mode to get the cool bokeh effect or have everything in focus in landscape photography. You can use Shutter or “S” mode to increase shutter speed for more fast paced action like sports and birds or slow it down to get more blur to get a sense of speed. Finally, when you’re ready, try out full manual mode. When in aperture or shutter mode, the camera takes care of the other settings and automatically adjust them for you for the picture to be “technically” good. In manual mode, you’ll get full control of the depth of field you want, how much motion blur, and how bright you want to expose your image.

Take the online course. Go to a real library and flip through the coffee table photo books of the masters like Annie Leibovitz, Helmut Newton Steve McCurry, Yousuf Karsh, or David LaChapelle. Study their composition and their lighting. Read about how they created specific shots and developed their style. Choose a few of your favourite images they created. Then go out into the world and try to create images using their techniques. Be purposeful; set the exposure, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO where you think it should be. Then evaluate your photo and adjust the settings until you get it right. It's free, go do it. Enjoy the experimentation. When photos don't turn out, try to figure out why, adjust, and try again. Laugh.

Review your photos with other people that don’t love you. Your family and friends will always compliment you but often won’t give you the critiques you really need. Take up a class, join a local photography group, upload to a photo forum, etc. Be prepared to have your heart broken a few times but you will never learn faster than getting immediate feedback on your own work. I cannot thank my professor and classmates for their honest and often harsh feedback. I learned more during critiques than I could ever imagine. I continue to showcase my work with other photographers who I trust to be kind but honest and push my work daily.

I always review my photos the next day after I edited them. If it's too much, I'll tone down what I've edited. And there's no right or wrong because our style can change over time as we grow.

From personal experience the power of reviewing and critiquing own work and indeed giving feedback to others, is part of the journey of developing as a photographer - where one aim is to strive to develop technical skills and creativity in order to place quality over quantity of images. In a digital age with storage / memory cards greater than ever before, in comparison with limitations of 24 or 36 photographs (film) in the past, personally meant no urgency to review and recompose all too often. My top tip is to review often, shoot less, helps the work flow and challenges yourself to make that one ‘picture tells a thousand words’, as opposed to take a thousand pictures, no words!

While this is a little different from what #4 is indicating, I believe instantly being able to review your images on the LCD of a digital camera is one of the best ways to determine whether or not your image is over- or under-exposed, and if you've placed your subject within the frame to tell your story to your audience the way you wish. I could never get that kind of instant feedback and review with film. And a quick look at the resulting image right after clicking the shutter button is the first step in reviewing your image, followed by a much closer, more detailed look once you've pulled that image file up onto your computer screen.

Learning art history is so important and actually pretty under-rated when it comes to photography. Art movements tell you the origins of why that particular movement gained momentum, what made the artists create art in a certain way, take inspirtation from these movements and you'll learn so much about composition and colour theory just from these. Pick up 'Jansen's history of art', look for published photobooks, subscribe to the newsletters being published by your favourite photographer.

This can be a great opportunity to try out different cameras, lenses, and other equipment before you invest in your own.

There is now a significant amount of great content on YouTube. Research tutorials and then go out there and practice! Practice is key before having a client in front of you. Grab a friend an test out what you learned online and be prepared for any situation!

There are so many people who are teaching new techniques on photography and you just have to look for the right fit! The market for doing food photo shoots is huge! There is a demand for it! Creating a portfolio in any category is important and have it reviewed to make sure they are put together correctly. There are also classes you can take that are either free or a small cost. You have to remember they are trying to make money too.

The beauty of photography lies in its ability to capture the real world, so embrace every opportunity to snap away. To truly enhance your skills, I encourage you to embark on personal projects. These projects give you the freedom to explore your unique vision and showcase your distinct perspective. It can be as simple as choosing a theme, like "street portraits" or "macro nature," and challenging yourself to capture a series of photos that truly embody your artistic voice. And here's a little secret: the best photographers never stop learning.

I recommend taking a trip to a local place, like a Butterfly Garden and capture a few hundred images from different perspectives, zoom levels, and both horizontal and vertical orientation. ????

My experience is that you must first ‘see’ before you capture. See in two dimensions. This process alone is a lifetime endeavor. Learn to recognize the images that are before you in everyday life. Look around you for the people, places, things, that intrigue you; then try to capture what you see. And try a LOT. Always shoot RAW, and always compose in the camera. Explore focal lengths, shutter speeds, and apertures. When you load into Lightroom (or your chosen processor) spend time critiquing yourself constructively. See what works and what doesn’t and why. Then go shoot a LOT more! You will eventually be able to capture your own vision automatically; second nature.
