Having a mentor or advisor can be a valuable asset for any startup founder, especially if you are new to the entrepreneurial journey. However, to make the most of this relationship, you need to manage your expectations and communicate clearly with your mentor or advisor. Here are some tips on how to do that.
Before you seek out a mentor or advisor, you should have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with their help. Do you need guidance on product development, market validation, fundraising, or scaling? Do you want feedback, advice, connections, or introductions? How often do you want to meet and for how long? Having a specific and realistic goal will help you find the right mentor or advisor for your needs and avoid disappointment.
Establishing clear and open lines of communication is the foundation of any mentoring relationship. As a mentor, it’s important to discuss goals, limitations, and the scope of the mentorship upfront. This helps in setting realistic expectations and prevents misunderstandings.
Goals: My short answer. As a startup coach I agree with the answer. Yes.. The entrepreneur should first make a decision that they need a coach/mentor. That’s the key to success. Then they should take action: *Find the mentor/coach they feel can help them. *Next start to mentoring program with the coach. As a startup coach this is where the work begins for coach and the entrepreneur. *Discuss entrepreneurial ideas. *Discuss with them goal setting strategies to get them there. *Finally we teach how to create the business plan( Map quest) of business success. From the start it's important to understand the role of a mentor/advisor. It shouldn't be based on a friendship per say but more so on a level of professionalism. Ask questions, ask questions and keep on asking questions. Be comfortable with be honest and truthful and be honest with receiving advice that may be uncomfortable to grow.
A good mentor can help you define realistic goals. This relationship should be focussed on framing the best challenges or relevant questions for the start-up’s grade of maturity. If the mentor is not an investor there should be agreed expectations on the time requirements and regularity of exchanges. All that being said, often VCs tell me that their most successful startups are busy generating growth, while the less fortunate ones are easily recognizable by their high frequency askings for support or guidance. As with most things there should be a balance between seeking advice and executing it.
Once you have found a suitable mentor or advisor, you should communicate your expectations and ask them about theirs. What do they expect from you as a mentee or advisee? How do they prefer to communicate and share information? What are their availability and response time? How do they measure success and progress? By aligning your expectations and establishing ground rules, you can build trust and respect with your mentor or advisor.

As a coach I want to understand what the clients expectations are.
