Cooperative learning groups can be very successful or an utter failure. Students sitting together around the same table does not automatically constitute a cooperative learning group. Before students are grouped together, it is important to know the students- Who is an introvert? Who comes across as insecure? Who comes across as outspoken and loud? Who is unhappy? These and many more aspects must be taken into consideration. Training and choosing a function for each participant before groups are formed is crucial. Functions include a Timekeeper, Spokesperson, Encourager, Scribe, Group Leader, etc. Clear guidelines are essential about the purpose and learning goal; positive interdependence and accountability; member contribution and process.

Another important step to manage cooperative learning groups is to monitor and support group progress throughout the process. I have successfully managed cooperative learning groups for several years now. Based on my experience, the best way to manage CLG is to be acquainted with the learner's strengths, abilities, skills, and personality. This way, it's easier to classify and designate each member's roles, furthermore, unity plays a very big role in positive interdependence which may help to acquire positive outcomes.

I think planning is the most crucial aspect of creating learning groups. When we plan and keep the task ready, learners get into their roles quickly. It’s important to select those tasks and learning engagements that need a collaborative group setting. When the task calls for collaboration it works well with learners. It’s essentially good to give the group agency to decide their roles, discuss each one’s contribution to the task and also create their own success criteria. This will bring out leadership skills, learning that is authentic and a group of engaged learners who know what to do and how to do it.

It is vital to think about not just group interdependence but also indicual accountability and equal participation within the groups. Group learning is important but learning to learn together is a learned skill and in the beginning learners will have to be taught how to collaborate through the design of our collaborative tasks. So, the following four principles propurted by Dr. Spencer Kagan must be embedded in the task: Positive interdependence, Individual accountability, equal participation and Simultaneous interaction.
