Do your research and know who you want to apply to, know what they offer, and study the company. Have good information and questions to ask. Most of all, be sure this is the company you want and then when you interview, tell them why you want an internship there.

Once you secure an internship, make sure you understand what is expected of you and what you can expect from the organization. Communicate with your supervisor, mentor, or coordinator about your goals, responsibilities, and feedback. Establish a clear and realistic plan for your learning outcomes, tasks, and deadlines. Ask questions and be a sponge, learn what you can about the industry, he company, and the job. Show the leaders of they company why you deserve to be there and why it would be in their interests to offer you a career there when you graduate. Always ask for feedback and what you could improve on.

Did you know you can literally expand your network exponentially? A brilliant college professor explained this to me in grad school. Let's say Chris is in a hiring position at the company, but currently has no open positions. Even so, you can still perhaps get to know Chris and ask for feedback on your resume. If Chris accepts, chat about the feedback a bit and then ask if there are any other people Chris might recommend you ask for feedback. Ask if you can say Chris referred you, which will help get them to accept. Repeat this process with each reviewer, and you will soon have a pool of contacts who are all talking about your resume -- and they helped you make it the one they want to see!

Often, new graduates are shocked to find how difficult it can be to get hired. Even with a college degree, employers screen for experience. The quintessential catch-22 is how does one get experience if employers will not hire those who have none. Listing internships on a resume is a great way to bridge the gap between education and real-world experience. List internships as you would prior work experience, being sure to concisely point out skills and responsibilities which communicate to employers you are ready for a conversation on their level.

An internship is not the end of your career journey, but a stepping stone to your next move. Plan ahead for your post-internship goals and actions. Do you want to pursue a full-time position at the same organization? Do you want to explore other opportunities in the same or different field? Do you want to further your education or training?
