Regardless of where in the competitive pyramid or where you are in the lifecycle of your team, the same core principles can be applied to goal setting. Rather than working from a "we want to be the best", break things down into smaller milestones. A good example can be "We want to qualify for a Major within the next 3 cycles." Then, apply progress indicators towards - things that are not results-based, but behaviour-based. Are we training enough? Are we training the right way? Are we following the rules of engagement set out by all of us? Are we balancing our lives correctly to give 100% focus to training? Start with the process, and focus on that rather than results, and you will find a much more healthy sustainable growth trajectory.

From the outset, have an idea of where you are going. Esports teams typically have one goal and that is to WIN. This isn't a realistic goal and often foregoes any opportunity to learn. We work with teams to help them set realistic, attainable goals that deliver growth and provides continuous opportunity to learn along the way

Performance and results are about who can train at the highest quality for the longest amount of time, it really is that simple. Despite the trendy focus on working smarter and not harder, in the world of performance, results are created by hard work - and loads of it. Before you start min-maxing and optimizing, focus on the surrounding lifestyle and commitment, which will enable you to train for longer at a much higher quality. I would argue that in esports, we are still very far from training at the highest capacity, simply because we don't act as athletes yet. The biggest gain in esports performance is still surrounded by nailing the basics and working much harder than the rest, for a sustained period of time, without burning out.

It goes without saying that training in-game is very important. The meta is constantly shifting and if players aren't keeping up to date and adapting their gameplay, then they can very easily lose touch. However, it is important for esports players to have a holistic approach to training, varying their routine and schedules to provide time for physical training, mental training and importantly, time off.

Communication is a fundamental skill needed to succeed in esports. Each esport title comes with its own nuanced language that needs mastering for you to be an effective team in-game. Outside of the game an esports roster needs to work hard on effectively communicating their schedules, their emotions, their lives in general so that there is continuous trust built up amongst typically remote players. It's so important for the constant communication to occur, as meeting up to just play games often leads to a hollow team

Honest feedback and communication are essential to any high-performing unit. One thing is the ability to communicate effectively with the right clarity during tense in-game situations, often across cultures and nationalities. An equally vital component is the ability to review and improve the unit after each game. If you don't know how to properly communicate without your ego taking over, and create a safe space for everybody to learn and improve as a team, you will not be able to move forward at a high enough pace. Any team with true ambitions needs to make communication a focus area because it is the fundamentals of everything else you want to accomplish.

The competition is always changing. The developers of each title are continuously tweaking the game based on feedback but also to keep the games feeling fresh. This is called Meta change. This is the single biggest hurdle to any team's continued success as they can't rely on old play styles to get them through. This takes a bit of study outside of the game to fully understand the breath of changes and then it takes a bit of testing and experimentation in game to understand how to use the changes to your advantage. Each team's approach to this will be different, so there is no one size fits all solution. You have to trust in your coach and players that they are making the right decisions around this

Grind, grind, grind. Showing up every day with the tenacity and willingness to keep making tomorrow better than yesterday, puts you ahead of the competition in many ways. It's often a lonely thing practicing and improving things every day and often times you don't see the progress during the ups and downs of the short-term. Remember to zoom out, look at where you started, and use it as fuel to never give in, and never give up. Learning to enjoy the little victories and listening to your true passion of esports is what gets you there in the end.
