Most generators at drilling rigs will be operating at low efficiency nonoptimal operation points between 30% to 40% load and with an efficiency of 0.4 Liter per kWh which is higher than the normal 0.285 Liters per kWh. Solar has to be added taking into consideration that the generator load will not drop below 25% where the fuel consumption will increase further and eradicate fuel saving. Solar Steam generation can be an effective method to utilize solar effectively. Solar power can be utilized optimally when the load is well studied and coupled with battery storage to reach 50% to 100% saving depending on the battery size.

The issue with solar is that it cannot compensate any change in demand, by itself. BESS or a spinning generator is then needed (the latter negates partly the cost and environmental benefits).

Theoretically, you can build a rapidly deployable micro-grid with solar+BESS or solar+BESS+dieselgen. Solar by itself won't cut it (intermittency, 20% capacity factor). The cost of electricity, though, will end up being high. Also, the footprint may be (or not) an issue: land rigs need, what, 1 MW peak? That's 5-6 acres. Now provide for the redundancy to feed BESS (x4): we are talking about 25-30 acres for just one rig.

Given the size of a typical ring between 50 to 1000 KW, the wind turbines utilized will be used to cover at least 30% of energy on an offgrid site. On Grid connected rigs and if enough wind is available, can easily power up the rigs with grid design .

No. You'd need a rapidly deployable wind PP - which is not totally out of the realm of possibility, but still would require a specialized mobile solution of low rating (size is everything in wind) with multiple units - which would make the cost of electricity prohibitive. Plus, of course, intermittency and a 25-30% capacity factor. So, will need a BESS on top. Total cost will be through the roof.

Cost questions aside (I am not sure it is economically viable - probably not), geothermal would allow for drilling operations since it is dispatchable on demand. Caveat emptor: It won't be able to compensate transients, but this can be solved by coupling it with a reasonable-sized BESS.

This is a complete theoretical fantasy: collocating geothermal and oil drilling would take the definition of "coincidental" to a whole new level. Geothermal is not readily available. It's drilling risk is probably on par with that of oil reserves'. So, you need a location that (a) has a high chance of striking the oil, (b) high chance of striking steam, (c) with oil drilling operations delayed until geothermal drilling is [successfully] finished and the plant is built. After the oil drilling operations cease, the geothermal plant becomes a stranded asset.

Hydrogen is a promising renewable fuel that can be utilized to ensure the Green Oil Rig operation. Currently at 3$ per kWh, the cost of hydrogen is still repulsive for commercial use. It is expected with new technologies and mediums used to generated hydrogen, with availability of generation sources, the price will level down to 0.2 $ per kWh by 2030 to 2035 given the huge investment in hydrogen generation plants. Pilot small scale projects are available to showcase the technology that will be utilized in the future. Transportation is still hurdle for hydrogen adoption in remote offgrid sites. The optimal solution will be to use onsite future compact hydrogen generators that uses solar to generate water from air and utilize directly at site

Hydrogen produced onsite by an intermittent energy source (wind?), or transported overland through great distances? The second is a non-starter, at least right now.

Where will you get H2 from? Doubt it's going to be a dedicated pipeline running through the middle of nowhere to feed the drilling pad location. Transporting with tanker trucks? Makes no sense. Producing in-situ? A mobile H2 electrolyzer on a skid is a possibility - but what would feed it? Solar/wind? See my comments above. Also - why convert the electricity to H2 to feed back into electricity with a 60% loss? Bottom line: nope.

You are looking at drilling in itself. But the total carbon footprint is not just the electricity to drive the rig. You''ll have a lot of truck traffic (commissioning/decommissioning, mud, water, etc.) Reducing emissions from the trucking may have a notable effect.

For ongrid sites, addition of solar, wind and geothermal electricity production can reduce the cost of electricity at sites. For offgrid sites, the cost saving can be achieved when battery storage is coupled with Solar or Wind i.e. intermittent source of power. The sizing of the battery system will be dictated based on the number of backup days needed and the number of hours the thermal power generation need to run per day.

Solar battries can be used to replace or used alongside with diesel engines. This will help to reduce carbon emissions in the rig site but the Solar panel footprint may me occupying more area of land

Ability to dispatch and transient response: those are the two keywords, from a technical perspective, that are needed to be kept in mind. And, of course, cost.
