Here is an amazing, yet simple framework for assessing your digital maturity (as well as your overall current resource investment mix). All you have to do is score yourself across the 4 P's different axes: People, Platforms, Processes and Partners. To what extent are you utilizing people (manual labor and efforts) to get work done today. To what extent are you utilizing platforms to enable faster, better or easier work. Are you processes working for you, or against you? Do you have partners managing some aspects? You often don't need more people. You often need better platforms, processes, or partners. This will give you good intel on your digital maturity.

Another approach to create digital visions, is paradoxically to try not to focus on the digital. Instead, keep your eye on the users and products and the solutions in between. Then ask yourself what vision you could have if you worked in a liniar way. Then ask yourself what vision you could have if you worked in an exponential way. Take those two different outcomes, and ask yourself what you should be doing differently in order from going from A to B, while keeping your fixed costs at the level of A the whole time When you're done, you will discover that you've made a digital vision and roadmap that seamlessly integrates with reality and not as an isolated digital strategy which could easily be struggling to get implemented afterwards.

If you remember in the heydays of Intranet - every management team rushed in and built one - the trouble was adoption.. At this point, the roadmap should be stepwise increasing adoption - I would go with one department as a pilot and build from there. Of course, this should be built as a platform so all departments talk to one another in time.

At each stage, a pilot group has to be created and evangelists from this group should go forth to ensure excellent adoption. Gamification (carrots) works better than the stick (moving things to the platform and forcing people to go there)
