There are many identical jobs with different titles. Large organizations often have strict use of titles and smaller companies may tell you to pick your own title (and be creative!). There is also the component of level of role. When looking at the same job description, a large organization may have it positioned as a Manager level and a smaller organization could have it posted as a Director. So my advice is going to be a little different. While you want to be recognized for the level of responsibility you'll be managing, don't get fixated on a title. Review the roles accountabilities and expectations. Will you enjoy it? Is the compensation fair based on the role? Decide if the experience could outweigh a job title.

I recommend that you move beyond the job title and begin by reading the Qualifications / What you bring section of a job posting. It is in that section that you find out what a potential employer is looking for in a candidate. When you have reviewed many job posting you will begin to get a solid understanding of several job titles that are a good fit for your knowledge, skills and expertise. This is the beginning of labour market research versus reading job postings to find a job. This strategic approach will serve you well as you explore the intersection of your talents with the needs of the labour market / job market.

We often refer to the venn diagram of Ikigai to get you thinking about what you really love doing. This does not guarantee a direct path to getting paid to do what you love but it can certainly start you in the right direction. All jobs have parts that you must endure but the more you reduce those challenges, the quicker you can start to do more of the work you love.

Who said you need to complete answer right now? Often the ideal job or career comes after a period of time going through various roles to then find that perfect fit. Often this is not until the later half of your career. Arthur C Brooks wrote a great book about this called From Strength to Strength and he spoke at length about building career capital on the way through. Always keep asking what can you learn in this new role, even if it's not the perfect one YET!

People are often happy to share knowledge or even spend 30m with you for the price of a cup of tea (or sometimes not even that) If your network isn't strong, how can you build it?
