What are the best ways to grow and maintain your innovation and entrepreneurship outcomes?

I think the suggested tools, relative to the situation under assessment should be the first line of action. Depending on the business concept, it is important to do a proper analysis as a way of figuring out what is and what will be. An all encompassing due diligence ensures that an innovator or would be entrepreneur develops a scalable model, has consciousness of potential pitfalls, decides on partnership model early on, and most especially develop a concise revenue generating pathway.The most important part of a business oriented idea is revenue generation, and even in the excitement of developing their creative innovation into a business, startups should remember that the business needs to make enough money and be self sustaining.

In my experience, this part consists on understanding the existing culture, processes, and employee engagement levels. Identifying strengths and weaknesses, and gauging the organization’s adaptability to change are critical. This firsthand assessment serves as a practical starting point, allowing for targeted improvements and laying the foundation for effective innovation strategies based on the unique dynamics of the organization.

Unless an organization is being led by a fearless and fully committed leader such as a Steve Jobs or a Jeff Bezos innovation can NOT have a seperate strategy. Innovation is a means to an end and not the end in itself and it is in the service of management. Therefore the strategy for innovation at an organizational level must be derived from the existing strategy and translated into ventures that drive KPIs that reflect that strategy’s success. We are telling executives that if they support innovation activities in various ways especially investment then it will allow them to successfuly implement their business strategy in great leaps and bounds. Taking another course of action is self-delusion.

I used to be all for using one's guts to set goals and strategies. But after the failure of an otherwise well received business idea, I have come to appreciate the use of appropriate business building tools. At the very least, they help to keep the focus on the processes, the immediate and achievable plans and most importantly, they help to measure progress. However, it is imperative that one doesn't become to fixated on them, to the detriment of the instincts that still yet make good ideas become great ideas.

Defining clear outcomes, measuring them effectively, and outlining concrete actions are paramount. Leveraging frameworks like SMART goals, OKRs, or logic models provides a structured approach. This process is not just about setting targets; it’s about creating a roadmap that aligns the organization’s vision, mission, and values with specific activities in innovation and entrepreneurship. This alignment ensures a cohesive and purpose-driven approach, guiding the organization towards tangible and meaningful results in the dynamic landscape of innovation.

I dont think networking is enough for a business startup. Yes, some types of startups will benefit from networking but because of the time and effort it takes, most might not. The aforementioned platforms might be a great place to start for many small startups and though I would agree that LinkedIn does have a lot to offer would be entrepreneurs in certain climes, however in others it leaves many behind because the platform design and UI is highly restrictive and uni-dimentional. What most new businesses need the most is exposure and I really cannot see how networking on these platforms foster that.

In my experience, Building Your Network and Resources is about creating a supportive ecosystem for innovation. Establishing connections with industry experts, mentors, and organizations has proven invaluable. Investing in the development of the workforce through targeted training programs is a key aspect. Allocating resources wisely involves a nuanced understanding of budget considerations, technological requirements, and human capital. Drawing from my own perspective, a well-connected and resourceful network enhances the organization’s capacity for sustained innovation, creating an environment conducive to entrepreneurial success.

One thing that has worked for my startup is the use of agile development methodology in project design and development and prototyping and user testing for design testing and improvement, especially as a way to develop a scalable model. Once creativity has kicked off, and ideas are flowing, a team that can work at bringing the flow of creative ideas to life through a prototype should be put together. As for MVP's, I am not a huge fan because from my personal experience they tend to put off consumers if public expectations are unmet. The risks with MVPs is, they hardly get a second chance if the product generates negative reviews. On the other hand, usability testings tend to keep negative feedbacks in-house until improvements are done.

Not only does evaluating your results help in measuring the effectiveness of steps taken thus far, it boosts confidence also. All the steps taken so far will now be shown to be effective or not. While I am not particularly sure how measuring innovation metrics work, as I have never done one, I do know how invaluable measuring entrepreneurship and social impacts metrics are. The most substantial tool I have ever used are surveys. A well designed survey will tell a compelling story about the product, its users, its potential, its weaknesses, its place alongside competitors and most especially, its future. Good surveys help to save money because they establish product viability and popularity and make marketing easier.

In my view, embracing a reflective process that involves reviewing and revising goals, strategies, actions, and outcomes is crucial. Incorporating feedback loops like after action reviews, retrospectives, or peer reviews facilitates a deeper understanding of successes and challenges. Utilizing tools such as journals, blogs, or podcasts adds a structured dimension to this learning journey. This ongoing cycle enables the identification of valuable lessons learned, best practices, and areas for improvement. Sustaining innovation and entrepreneurship outcomes is not just about initial success but a dynamic process of refinement and evolution over time.
