The major challenge, all "pure" researchers have is, that most of the real "stuff" which is happening in industry, has little to do with what they have experienced (and vice versa). Therefore, getting practical and applied knowledge for me is the best step to go into this direction. Unfortunately, from my past experience I found a huge gap between what people can and want to do coming from a more researchy background and also what industrie needs them to do. Therefore, especially in the area of data science, I like the rising people looking for data engineering jobs, which are heavily needed.
