Typically when I meet an influential person I will always connect with them on LinkedIn and write them a follow up note to remind them of our interaction and that I would like to keep in touch with them. I also follow them and the organization that they work for and like their articles, comment etc to show that I am paying attention to their online presence and that I want to keep a relationship with them.

To take it a step further you could just facilitate the meeting on your own proactively to provide most value efficiently and portray a position of influence with non verbal comm. Often I do not get a chance to meet someone that I was focused on at an event. They are busy, they don't know me, my outreach prior to the event went unanswered. If you just take a traditional "sorry I missed you, would love to connect" approach, you are likely to still receive no reply. Do some leg work. See if they posted about a topic or session at the conference. What were they looking to get out of being at the conference. Then tailor your message. "I saw you were a panelist on session x. My takeaway about that is ABC. Is that what you hoped to convey? Can I help spread that message by doing Y?" No guarantees ever, but you have made it far easier to reply on a win for them around a topic or event they were passionate about.

I think it is important for you to understand that the worth of a human being isn't tied to their influence. Yes, it is good to show appreciation and respect but at the same time, don't go overboard with compliments and make yourself smaller to make them feel bigger. I have found that when you meet people as equals, they will see you as equals. If you behave in a manner where it seems like you want/need something from them, the energetic exchange is thrown off and the true connection that could have been made is now severed.
