What are the best ways to experiment with email marketing?

In my experience, users read emails when *they* find time - at night, on weekends, even monthly. The email design and content should reflect these. Try to send recommendations/ offers that are time invariant, or at least not liable to change/ expire on a day-to-day basis. Emails also give the most real estate for sharing your brand story and can be used for Brand Building rather than pure performance marketing.

E-mails are part of your pipeline, and although they have historically been used in a campaign format, this needs to be an ongoing part of your core marketing activities. This is important to consider before experimenting and target setting.

One of the easiest ways to get started with segmentation is to separate your buyers from non-buyers (prospects). If you have multiple products/services then further segment by that. That way you're not wasting email time and attention sending messages that are not relevant to to the subscriber ... like sending a sales promotion to a customer who already purchased the product.

E-mail segmentation ultimately aims to increase your ROI and thus needs to be clear and framed. For example, separating subscribers based on location or percentage of online activity can assist with more effective targeting and providing tailored content.

Make these catchy and personal. It's important to show the reader how value could be added through a product/service and the value proposition in detail. Avoid making these generic and give the reader a reason to read the e-mail. Add an element of scarcity and curiosity to entice the recipient to want to open the e-mail.

Generally, e-mail testing is aimed at optimising your e-mail campaigns, guaranteeing higher deliverability and ultimately leading to better customer engagement. As part of this process, e-mail content and design is essential. The content side provides insight into which type of content works best (i.e., blog type, videos, links to purchases), whereas the design looks at readability, user-friendliness and attraction. Test these using different templates on metrics such as click rates, follow-throughs, etc.

Similar to testing for content/design, timing and frequency are equally important to gauge your audience's response rate. Monitoring unsubscribers is also a key part of this exercise. Eventually, you will find your "sweet spot" with this and can optimise this further.
