What are the best ways for executives to build and maintain a strong personal brand and reputation?

"Personal brand" has always felt a bit calculated, manipulative and controlled to me personally. It feels more proactive, methodical, and controlled. Reputation is about how others perceive you based on actions. Establishing a strong reputation as a leader is fairly straight forward: 1. LISTEN to understand - we all want to be seen and heard. Help others to feel this in your presence. They're more likely to contribute to the conversation. 2. Do what you say you're going to do. INTEGRITY is a simple thing...but a hard thing. 3. COACH and be COACHABLE - Give empathetic and constructive feedback (both + and not!) and seek other's input. Actions always speak louder than words!

Do what you say and say what you do. Consistently nurture relationships without expectation. Seek feedback, self-reflect, learn and grow. Repeat.

Forget your brand, unless you're a product itself. It's about reputation. And whether you know it or not, reputation will precede you. Which means turning it off and on when you think people are watching could be integrity issue number one. We take ourselves wherever we go. Having a strong sense of that self and where your weaknesses lie is actually a great starting point. No organization can rise above the level of its leadership. Consistent communication of your brand allows people to understand who you are as person and professional and how you work and operate and what values are important to you. By doing that, you will attract clients who actually believe in your cause, your values and your purpose and this is essential for a successful brand.

You need to be authentic to build credibility. This means living to your values whether you think they are the right ones or not. Deviate to far and you’ll be undone. People won’t trust you and will always offer guarded collaboration. Be prepared to do what’s right even if it impacts you or challenges your values. Have a deep look at how it’s challenging your values if you are sure it’s not right then stand your ground but if you’re twisting to values to justify opposition step back and admit you were wrong. Humility will help you build collaborative networks.
