In my view, evaluating HR operations staff learning preferences is a dynamic process that involves a combination of surveys, interviews, assessments, feedback analysis, observations, and flexibility. Traditional way is to get them fill up their Individual Development Plan, initiate quizzes and also ask their reporting bosses to fill those form to understand their career need and life goal. We can engage lots of digital tool to arrest that. But I prefer to to catch them one to one up to a certation level and coach them to their aspirational goal and learning/skill up need with respect to their current position. Digitally things are quite robotics but when you connect for a talk, you can deep drive and get the answer from them only and set up SMART goal and execution plan.

I am of opinion that managers should be in a position to determine what type of learner their respective staff are. Data is the new oil. You can track engagement, completion time, turnover rate and other metrics... but they will only make sense if you provide redundancies for the learning being studied. If you promote alternatives, you can claim that a change in media/way of delivery has a real impact on learning.

In my opinion interaction is the important tool. I have found that best practice research in all HR strategies assigned strategically to a small project team develops new skills for the team members. After all team members have done their individual research which inevitably helps evolve their skills, I have asked each team member to do a teach back to their colleagues. Using this approach l have found that individuals learn more about HR in other organizations as well as using their analytical and problem solving skills. What are the pros and cons of each proposed best practice? How does the practice compare to what our organization has in place? Finally, how might proposed shifts to our practices benefit the organization and what pain points will be resolved. Learning for all!

It's also important to reflect as a leader and assess the organization's commitment to provide the necessary resources and tools to invest in staff. There is no use in understanding your staff and how they process information best if you are not willing to invest in what is needed to provide them with what they need to be successful.

Listen to your team when they speak up. Occasionally you'll have someone come to your office with an idea or comment on what they like or disliked about a recent training, but it is rare. What better way to learn what your team likes or dislikes than to get the information straight from the source! Don't let those opportunities pass you by, because chances are this one person is saying something several others have thought but did not take the time to express. Show that you value the input your team brings you and hopefully they will be more willing to come to you with their perspectives in the future!

All true, but... Remember, that most of your managers are "totally unqualified" to perform whatever is suggested in the text and the comments above. The starting point therefore should be teaching managers (!), not staff, about their own learning and communication preferences, and then gradually helping them to figure out that others (their staff) are NOT like them, and can have (surprise surprise!) DIFFERENT learning and communication preferences. And, from my experience, most managers are genuinely surprised when they finally figure that out ;-)
