Your best opportunity to observe is before that person believes they are in line for the post. Look for traits that will maintain or enhance momentum of the organization. Then, look for traits of coachability, loyalty, maturity, and leadership. Be aware that anyone you consider may betray you at any time, even those you carefully consider.
