What are the best ways to ensure a smooth filming process in Video Production?

When planning a video, start with the end goal in mind. Ask yourself "What's the main thing you want your audience to do after watching your video?" This is your "Ultimate Goal". Too often, video projects start with vague goals focused on the business like "I want a video to show people how to use our new software platform". But an 'Ultimate Goal' is more about the benefits like "I want to teach people how our software works to increase satisfaction and reduce customer service emails" Once you've nailed this down, the purpose of your video becomes super clear, now you can craft your messaging. Jot down the key messages you want to include in your video, ensuring they're in line with your 'Ultimate Goal'.

Ensuring a smooth filming process in video production requires careful planning, effective communication, and attention to detail. Develop a clear vision for the project, including the goals, message, and target audience. Create a detailed script or storyboard outlining the scenes, shots, and sequences. Scout locations and obtain necessary permits or permissions for filming. Assemble a talented and experienced production team, including crew members and talent. Schedule pre-production meetings to discuss roles, responsibilities, and logistics. Ensure all filming equipment, including cameras, lenses, microphones, lighting, and accessories, are in working order and fully charged. Conduct equipment tests and rehearsals.

I like to envision my ultimate film and story first. No budget. No boundaries. Just freely envisioning. Dreaming with the script. Because it is fun to do. imagining all the aspects- the characters, the set, the mood, the colours, the costumes,…all of it. I also imagine how smooth and how amazing the team will be. I make magic in my head first. Then I write out my dream. If I have not done so already! It is only after I have dreamed that I then look at the parameters I have been given to create in. I do my best to create as close to my ultimate as I can. There are always ways to do something in an easier or less expensive way. Think of yourself as the boss in a heist film assembling the team for an impossible mission. Find people who a) align with the vision of the project b) align with your work ethics c) are passionate about creating Film sets are chaos. Prep not only to minimize the chaos, but also to tackle it when it inevitably happens. Have Plan B and Plan C. Share them with your team. Have a Plan D for yourself. And a not so famous rule for shoot days - ensure there's good food. ??

Even if each person is a strong professional in their own field, if it seems at first glance that they don't understand each other well and communication is poor, this becomes a critical issue to address.

Team work is very important, put up a good team of people who love their job nd will go extra length to make sure it works and comes out good.

While going for a location recce, filmmakers often form ideas of what shots would look nice but seldom do they plan where these shots are going to fit. The expense of this is that on the day of shoot, they can either focus on the characters to complete the day's task or take extra shots which might seem a bit misplaced without context. Here is what one should do- 1. Create a mind map and floor plan of the location. 2. Allocate locations to each scene and dialogue. 3. If any view pleases you aesthetically make sure to note which scene it could be used in and act symbolic. 4. Plan the shoot based on location availability and lighting not on the basis of chronological events of your story. 5. Also plan the placement of equipment & props.

There're some few important things need to do during location recce for your video production: 1. Shortlisted your potential locations. 2. Reached out to location owner/PIC to discuss terms, fees, and permission. 3. Consider logistical factors such as parking, transportation, power sources and restrooms for cast and crew. 4. Conduct a brief walkthrough of each filming location with your camera to confirm that everything is align with your plan and storyboard.

Although it may sound underwhelming, location scouting is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the entire video production process. You sift through images, maps, recommendations, and references to select locations. Then, when you arrive at the location, you start to vividly imagine: where to position the camera, place the lights, anticipate passersby, and consider how the scene will appear differently through the lens. You also need to sort out permissions and even make decisions about colors for clothing or props, which often emerge during the location scout, along with new ideas.

Important to keep sound in mind especially if you are filming a news piece/ documentary. Can the subject/ interviewee be heard clearly? There's only so much cleaning up one can do in post-production. Eg: Avoid locations near construction sites.

If your camera allows shoot in Neutral color so that you can do colour correction. I also found it useful to have 10-12 b-Roll shots to use as cutaways. Use your smartphone or have an additional recorder to get a back-up sound. You can "cheat" with visuals but you can never cheat with sound.

When deciding what equipment to bring on set, make sure to create a checklist. Keep in mind that you don't always need the newest and fanciest gear—many video production tasks can be done with just a phone, a tripod, and a simple microphone. However, if you decide to use more advanced equipment, there may be dozens of accessories to bring. Ensure each item is useful; if it’s not, don’t bother bringing it at all.

Whenever possible, budget for redundancies. I've had top-tier gear from respected rental houses fail on the day. You name it: cameras, gimbals, monitors, wireless systems - the works. It's just good to have a catastrophe plan that still allows you to hit record.

Create a shot list and write out on each shot, what props will you need, what lenses and equipment you will need, who will need what make up and what props. You will also need to account for these props to be reset for each take. Same with make up. Before going on for a shoot, the night before, even if you have triple checked everything, build your rig and test to make sure everything works and you haven't forgotten a cable etc. Prepare, prepare and prepare. Take extra supplies for backup.

Use handwritten notes, lists, and even scripts, especially if you’re working with a small team or creating videos individually. There are numerous advantages to writing things by hand: you remember better, you are more creative, and you generate ideas in a more unrestricted manner. You are physically connected to your work from the very first stages. Follow your plan and schedule until you have a great moment for improvisation, allowing things to flow naturally in other directions as well. However, even in those cases, ensure you meet the minimum requirements—your script and shot list. You can always add more or create variations.

A good AD is invaluable. Again, hire the best. They will make your day run smoothly and manage any scheduling crises. They find time and efficiencies where others cannot. Don't scrimp on this!

Focus on crafting a coherent narrative that aligns with your initial goals, paying close attention to pacing, rhythm, and narrative flow. Hire the right people. Period. Bypass artists operating out of ego and choose professionals operating out of purpose. Learning to discern between the two will be a life saver.
