What are the best ways to develop your critical thinking skills?

The best way to start developing critical thinking is by questioning information and assumptions. Begin by asking yourself why you hold certain beliefs or opinions. Challenge your assumptions and seek alternative perspectives. Practice analyzing situations objectively, considering evidence and reasoning before forming conclusions. Engage in discussions or debates, exposing yourself to different viewpoints to broaden your understanding. Read diverse materials, including those that may challenge your existing beliefs. Develop the habit of evaluating information critically, distinguishing between fact and opinion. Lastly, actively solve problems and make decisions, applying logical reasoning.

What I have learnt these 3.5 years doing DSA problems is that , you need to break the problem into smaller chunks so that a 5th grader can also understand that problem, and if you have broken the problem successfully without a doubt you will be able to think for its solution, because the question is crystal clear in your mind.

Steps to understand a problem: - Define the scope and objectives - Understand what are the parameters going into the problem - Check for any binding constraints. - Check for any assumption or special cases - Devise the desired output - Create a workflow of the problem F=f(*args) where *args are the parameters and F is the function results. Is the source trustworthy? What is their motivation for presenting this information? For example, are they trying to sell you something or get you to take a certain action (like vote for them)?Practice active listening. In my experience, asking the question of why you are doing this.? Or why business is doing this clears a lot of fog in the idea and helps one to take decisions and actions to solve the bigger why and not the immediate gratification.

When in doubt, always ask questions. Begin with what you already know and double-check that you have all of the details correct. To assess whether you've correctly comprehended, ask for points to be repeated or consider rephrasing in your own terms. Consider asking follow-up questions to elicit information that may have been missed or misheard. Then, ask yourself whether something is a fact, an opinion, or a concept. This phase might assist you in assigning meaning and value to a piece of information.

I’ve found that spending a little extra time comparing different design possibilities can save huge amounts of time in the implementation phase. Make sure you clearly understand the pros and cons of each solution you have, and get some other people’s perspectives! Listening to other people’s thoughts will teach you what to consider in the future.

It is very important not to be biased with your views, advised to discuss things with everyone, compare and contrast ideas and perspectives, methods. This will give a clarity about the situation and improve performance and outcome.

I call this: Assessing the Net Benefit of each option. Net Benefit = Number of Pros - Number of cons. The goal is to find the option with the highest Net Benefit and rank the list from highest to lowest.

Learn from mistakes, improve on them next time. Though start imagining the solution simple, no, even simpler (it's a skill, I promise).. Make it something that is really easy to solve, then look at it again, and think, how can I go from this, to what I actually want to accomplish, and update your solution. This way, by going in these understandable steps, your solution will become more and more comprehendable. Climb the ladder, instead of trying to jump over it.

Sometimes we are very happy to come up with any solution that we forget to put it to the test. One practice is to imagine you are presenting your solution to your client or CTO, and to put yourself in their shoes. Ask yourself "how could this fail?" "are there obvious flaws my CTO would quickly point out?", "5 years from now, and 10,000 users later, would it still hold up?".

Developing analytical skills provides a structured and systematic approach to understanding and solving problems.
