What are the best ways to design and display writing conventions posters in your classroom?

I think dividing writing elements into categories based on a grading rubric can be helpful. So a poster for the most common grammar elements to use ( and grammar mistakes to avoid) can be helpful. The same can hold for punctuation; mechanics like use of numbers, capitalization, abbreviations and the like; and formatting.

I would have mini posters of writing conventions for my students to use at their desk or in an interactive notebook. I would also provide copies of specific ones when having small group instruction. Each group could have different ones based on their group ability and the lesson for the day.

Keep it simple. Easy font to read 3 simple conventions or topics to focus. An example is punctuation. Give the three examples for sentences. Another example is capitalization. When do we have a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, and if the noun is a proper name, date or a place. One small graphic Clear title CANVA is a good resource to make posters

One important function in design is called white space — the negative or “empty” space around the content itself. Don’t underestimate the importance of this element in instructional design! For example, if designing a poster on comma use, don’t cram it full of every possible comma rule. Strategically target 3-4 of the most common comma needs students will encounter at your classroom level. This way, the poster will be more functional for quick reference without accidentally overwhelming students.

I agree with what Sarah offered. One or two clear examples per point. Keep content to three to five main points per poster.

Offer a space on each poster for students to provide their own examples. Rotate examples by writing teams or individual students once or twice a week. Students who see that their examples will be used for their classmates will be more invested to provide excellent examples. Students also love seeing their names in lights. So provide space to attribute examples to individual students.
