In my opinion, defining our career goals comes down to knowing what we don't want. In which areas do we have passion? In what areas do we not feel good? What are the aspects we need to improve on? What are the competencies we see as strong in ourselves? I think that if we understand these well, it may be useful to shape our own career goals accordingly. In short, if we do a SWOT analysis about ourselves, we see our strengths and weakneses, understand ourselves well and act accordingly. I believe it will be a good step to shape our career in the direction we aim for.

Here's a little trick to get started if you really have no clue. Many people have a hard time articulating what they want. Instead, simply start with what you don't want. List out the experiences that you want to avoid in personal and professional life. And once you have that, flip it. Look at your list and see what you can do instead. This is quite a powerful technique that I've used quite a number of times with clients who are a bit lost. It's surprisingly easy for us to share what we don't want. And we can make use of that.

In my opinion your career aspirations are not only about what you want, but also about what you can offer. Therefore, highlight your strengths and value when describing them. What skills, knowledge, or qualities do you have that make you stand out from the crowd? How do you add value to your current or potential employer, team, or clients? How do you measure your impact and success? Your strengths and value show that you are confident and competent in your field.

I align my aspirations with my values and vision by ensuring that the goals I set and the actions I take are consistent with what I believe in and the vision I have for both my personal and professional life. Ultimately, by integrating my passions, values, and vision into my professional endeavors, I strive to create a meaningful and fulfilling journey that contributes positively to both myself and the world around me.

A big mistake people make is emphasizing their skills without tying it to proper context and outcomes. Project management skills on their own don't really count for much. But if you communicate the desperate straits a client was in without structure in this area, and how you swept in and turned things around in 6 months using your project management expertise...now your skills resonates much more strongly. Always tie your skills into the end result.

As someone who values continuous learning and embraces constructive feedback, I encountered the challenge of managing a team with a disorganized organizational structure. Through my problem-solving skills and ability to build relationships, I successfully bridged the communication gap within the team to gain insight into their issues. Firstly, I defined the team's problems accurately. Then, I analyzed and identified the root causes of these problems. Next, I developed and implemented a plan to address the issue at hand. Finally, I monitored and evaluated the implemented plan to ensure its sustainability. I have this great memory of coaching a friend who's a tech veteran with over 20 years of experience.
