Know your customer! Determine which model would best motivate them by demographic research and/or polling. Tiers are helpful to entice your customers to increase their spend or do more of the behaviors you've identified (write reviews, etc.). But keep it simple - if it's too complicated to earn and redeem rewards, customers won't participate.

Our merchants benefit from our loyalty program that allows their customers to pay for their products and services by alternate means. This makes the customer happy because of instant cash back they earned for their purchases, based on percentage of total dollar value of that purchase. And the merchant is happy because they didn’t have to pay POS fees to banking institutions to make that sale. We have seen growth in our merchants raising the percentage of the cash back feature, which incentivizes our customers to go to one merchant over another for the same product/service. Ex: If a customer had the choice of 2 merchants to buy a brand name drill and 1 merchant paid 1% cash back and 2nd merchant paid 3% cash back. Where would you shop?

I think what Amazon has proven time and time again is start with customer value and focus on long term relationships. Emphasize starting with a deep understanding of what customers value most. This can be different for each business and customer segment. The loyalty program should offer tangible, relevant benefits that genuinely enhance the customer experience. Design the program to foster long-term customer relationships, not just repeated transactions. This could involve rewards for engagement, community building, or brand advocacy, not just purchase frequency. Ultimately you want to create a sense of belonging for your customer base.
