Research, research, research is the key to finding authenticity. The more cross referencing is done, the more certain you can be of the significance of the elements that you need to incorporate in a story. Deep research will help move past pop culture references and go to more authentic pockets of collective memory.

Location, sets, precise period costumes, genuine period dialect and mannerisms. Regardless of the period, humans basically function as they do in the present with slightly more effort.

Dive into fashion, tech, and societal norms. Use authentic locations or recreate for era's feel. Invest in accurate costumes, emphasizing fabrics, styles, accessories. Populate scenes with period-appropriate items for realism. Employ era-specific filming techniques for authenticity. Ensure meticulous details, from hairstyles to everyday items. Collaborate with experts for accurate script and visuals. Include a period-specific soundtrack for ambiance. Use era-specific dialects and language nuances if applicable. Craft dialogue aligned with the chosen time period's language. Portray the accurate cultural and social context. Refer to historical footage for inspiration and accuracy.

This might be obvious elements such as costume, cars and music but also more nuanced things such as social norms and attitudes of the time, particular turns of phrase for dialogue.

My worry is that having made a film about the 1926 general strike that what we could create as historical outcomes in both costume and set now when you research comes up as a source. We need to find a balance. What will be new and what will surprise the audience? Because today people have already seen a lot, a lot. And on the other hand, what will be familiar, recognizable? It is important that what is happening on the screen is clear. The endless dialogue about the invention of the atomic bomb can be difficult to understand and far from the audience.

I’m in the Lighting world and so I find it’s important to use the proper lighting for period correct films. The camera is also very important to pick the right one. Maybe it’s an old Panavision who knows. That grainy look helps the mood for the film.

I'll keep this short...... Firstly, do your homework on Costume, buildings interior and exterior, voices, what people ate and drank, and how people viewed the world - their opinions of "the time". Secondly, get the feeling right on the scene. Is it smokey or dirty enough for the time and place? Where are all the small details? Get these wrong and it will ruin any costume drama.

When you're shooting a period piece, and you're finally on set, two things are simultaneously true: 1. You can still adjust the set, the costumes, and the dialogue to be more historically accurate, and reflect the backgrounds of your characters. And 2: Don't stress too much about getting everything right. If you are making a film about the American Civil War, you will get reenactors who hate your film because you used too many buttons on a uniform. People will whine that your vikings aren't wearing helmets. They'll lambast your Ancient Greek war film for not portraying a phalanx. The key to making a good period piece is to make it authentic, not 100% accurate, and when you're on set, you'll have to make compromises. That's okay.

Surprisingly, using contemporary music can help an audience connect with the emotion of a period piece. Peaky Blinders used contemporary artists to evoke the drama of what was going on in Post-WW1 Britain. Bridgerton used arrangements of 21st century pop songs for 'period orchestras' for any of the ballroom/party scenes. Neither of those scenes would have 'hit home' like they did had they used music of 'those eras'.

Yes, time period filming. Obvious decor, music of the time and ethos of same but there are extra touches such as an odd news bulletin, something happening in the street, medical achievements of the day, latest artist to host an exhibition, perhaps a gold invitation card for an event, if not referenced in script, visual reference zoom in would be effective. Then the odd items of furniture or personalities with history of their own, esoteric, there are so many lateral aspects which would not generate costs. Look at the sets in TV series, once considered whacky but are now classic and timeless. If you have fun with it, then it will show and live on.

Locations are another character and should be considered carefully. Your Production Designer will be able add amazing layers of texture to the right locations to bring them to life. Setting the scene begins with location... before a single actor enters and a word of dialogue is spoken.

Collaboration is often key! Find set decorators/costume designers whose style matches yours or the desired look you're going for. They will often have a lot of the things you need to create the look you are going for as well.

Employ an experienced researcher. Use the information they provide together with the knowledge of you and your colleagues. You can take a view on the conflicting information you gather but it’s best if it is an informed view….

Do the best you can with locations… Then “off set” the time period slightly. Lots of leaves and all greenery to cover things. Physical is best in my book.

Keep in mind that stories set in another time and place are much more about the moment in which they are created, not the when and where of the movie. “Hamlet” is functionally English. Nobody comes away from it with a strong working knowledge of the politics of medieval Copenhagen. Similarly, there’s nothing particularly Italian about the Capulets or the Montagues. It’s why the hip hop in Luhrmann’s Gatsby is one of the best things in it. Be wary of those who preach about authenticity. It’s our job as storytellers to entertain, to delight - nobody should come out of your movie saying first and foremost, “The historical accuracy of the costumes and place settings!!!”
