What are the best ways to compare system architecture tools?

Before any tool comes method. The golden rule of experienced architecting. It is up to many factors to decide on: 1) Your audience. The core of *any* architecture=communication. Say your audience are SW engineers, perhaps opt for a tool that speaks UML. Maybe SysML for others. Tools have varying support for one or the other. 2) Decomposition. The underlying logic you use to decompose the System of Interest. (E.g. RFLP, funct. decomp., ...). Which logical layering and Stakeholder Views? 3) Visualization. The most effective way to communicate: what diagrams will I need? 4) Experience. Where lie my own strengths and weaknesses? How easy is it to learn/use a tool? 5) Cost. This includes effort of training. But remember: method > tool !

1. Identify the business need 2. Identify the right resources to address the need 3. Is there an existing solution in house? If yes, why does it not meet the need? Can it be made to meet the need, even short term 4. If no internal solution, list the requirements, and develop a selection matrix with criteria and put out an RFP. 5. Evaluate submissions against the selection criteria focusing on end user experience (otherwise it won't be used)

In my experience, rule number one is to keep the purpose in mind. Even the best tools can fail in they do not fit the purpose.

Tool is as good as we put to use. However never get limited by a tool to express the design. Ensure you can express every bit of detail that is required.

Consider the cost and risks. Consider what is the level of detail you are actually able to keep up to date. Understand the difference between modelling and diagrams. Do only the absolute minimum that you definitely need, that gives you the most clear benefit. Gather user requirements and throw away at least 80-90%. Do you need your system to evolve rapidly or are you making something fairly stable? Keeping models up to date is very hard. And when the models can't be trusted anymore it may not be possible to recover. Unfortunately the available tools are not as modern as you would expect. Collaboration is not great. But if you can't afford several people dedicated to modelling you are not big enough for it. Make diagrams for communication.
