1 Understand their point of view

Before you try to convince or persuade your colleagues to adopt your sustainability goals, try to understand where they are coming from. What are their motivations, values, and interests? How do they perceive the benefits and challenges of sustainability? How do they relate to the stakeholders and the context of your work? By listening to their point of view, you can show respect, empathy, and openness, and avoid making assumptions or judgments.

In sustainability teams it's not uncommon to have wildly different understandings and strategies, even though the goal seems simple. You will have people that are focused on DATA, Frameworks, ecology, Government policy, or people .... This is common. Sustainability and its methods/goas are complex for us all. I have used Miro and anonymous Ideating with post-its to find a consensus. The sticky notes can be sorted and discussed and through that process, collectively the group will soften their views and coalesce. It feels democratic and everyone usually feels like their voice is heard. The more unified the team the better :)

2 Find common ground

Once you have a better understanding of your colleagues' point of view, look for areas of agreement or alignment. What are the shared goals, values, or interests that you have in common? What are the sustainability issues or opportunities that you both care about or can benefit from? How can you leverage your strengths and complement your skills? By finding common ground, you can build trust, rapport, and collaboration, and avoid unnecessary conflicts or competition.

3 Communicate clearly and constructively

When you communicate with your colleagues about sustainability, be clear and constructive. Use simple and specific language, avoid jargon or acronyms, and provide examples or evidence. Explain the rationale and the impact of your sustainability goals, actions, or decisions, and how they relate to the overall objectives and vision of your work. Acknowledge the challenges and risks, but also highlight the opportunities and benefits. Be respectful and polite, avoid blaming or criticizing, and invite feedback and questions.

Die Kommunikation von Nachhaltigkeit ist h?ufig herausfordernd: Es beginnt schon mit der Frage, was Nachhaltigkeit eigentlich ist. So wird das Thema h?ufig als sehr umfassend und weitreichend empfunden. Das macht es wenig griffig und erschwert den Zugang. Darüber hinaus wird h?ufig zu viel an Vorwissen unterstellt, in Abkürzungen und mit zwar g?ngigen, dem Gegenüber aber oft unbekannten Begrifflichkeiten und Normen argumentiert. Nachhaltigkeitskommunikation sollte stets leicht verst?ndlich und so konkret wie m?glich am jeweiligen Thema erfolgen. Gerade bei Ma?nahmen und L?sungen sollte verst?ndlich werden, was im konkreten Fall das Problem ist, wie der L?sungsablauf ist und welchen Nutzen die Ma?nahmen bringt.

4 Seek mutual understanding and support

Communication is not a one-way street. You also need to listen and learn from your colleagues' sustainability insights, experiences, or suggestions. Seek to understand their point of view, even if you do not agree with it. Ask open-ended questions, paraphrase or summarize what you hear, and check for clarity and accuracy. Express appreciation and recognition for their contributions, efforts, or achievements. Offer support and assistance, and ask for help or advice when needed.

Despite your best efforts, you may still encounter disagreements or conflicts with your colleagues over sustainability issues. This is normal and inevitable, as sustainability is a complex and dynamic field that involves trade-offs, uncertainties, and multiple perspectives. However, you can manage these situations in a positive and productive way. Focus on the problem, not the person. Avoid personal attacks, accusations, or insults. Use "I" statements, not "you" statements. Express your feelings and needs, not your judgments or demands. Listen to their feelings and needs, not their positions or arguments. Seek to understand the underlying causes and interests of the conflict, not the superficial symptoms or positions. Look for win-win solutions, not win-lose outcomes.

Here are a few thoughts based on my experience building corporate sustainability programs: Recognize the tipping point where efforts with resistant colleagues become counterproductive. Avoid sacrificing supporters crucial for a passionate sustainability community while trying to convince naysayers. Shift quickly from futile arguments to productive dialogues. Ensure inclusivity by actively recruiting diverse voices and experiences, steering clear of a homogeneous community with identical mindsets. Avoid the "kumbaya" approach for a richer perspective. You don't have to tackle this alone; empower each supporter to be an ambassador, spreading the word and preventing bottlenecks in communication.

Think of the big picture-- it's easy to get caught up in the details but get back to common ground as quickly as you can. In my experience, pointing out priorities from the BoD, executive team and/or investor inquiries is hard to argue with. Focus on how this benefits the company and since we're all working for the same company, it's easier for them to see that we're all on the same side.

Communication is a skill that you can always improve and refine. You can learn from your successes and failures, from your feedback and evaluations, and from your observations and reflections. You can also seek opportunities to enhance your communication skills, such as taking courses, reading books, or joining networks. By keeping learning and improving, you can communicate more effectively and efficiently with your colleagues who have different priorities in sustainability, and achieve better results and outcomes for your work and the planet.

I've always strived to learn about the teams that I need to work with. That way I can speak their language. The concepts of sustainability might be new, but if I can frame them in the language and dialogue that they're familiar with, then it's easier for them to understand and draw parallels themselves. By talking about concepts, abbreviations, and topics others aren't familiar with, it can alienate them and make them less interested in working with you.

I have been in organizations that sustainability was being pushed at department level and not much of a top- down efforts. In my opinion it should not come at an interaction level communication but rather at an organizational level with a lot of leadership buy-in. Some things that we have pushed: - company level education to create common ground and understanding, (eg ED4S sustainability courses) - sustainability KPIs should makw it to department/team KPIs
