Use their existing content -- the stuff that has WORKED for them -- to get started. Anyone can use a generic style guide such as CMS, APA, MLA, etc. But why be generic when you can stand out? Help your client develop their own presence through their voice and style, and watch their engagement increase.

I usually create guidelines for each project I work on (i.e. use "won't" instead of "will not"; write like you're speaking to a friend vs. speaking to a friendly manager). Make sure all stakeholders involved in the writing process have access to this doc, and make them fact check accordingly.
