What are the best ways to build your personal brand in video editing?

Think of your portfolio as a visual resume and showcase your editing styles and techniques, proving you're a versatile editor. Highlight your creativity and organise your work by categories or themes to help you illustrate your consistent quality across different projects. A well-curated portfolio instills confidence in potential clients or employers, assuring them of your capabilities. By featuring diverse video types, you showcase your ability to adapt to various client needs. As you gain more experience, your portfolio becomes a living representation of your growth and expertise as a video editor. It's a tool that can open doors, secure projects, and enhance your reputation in the industry.

I would say just to create what you love. For me, I love creating cinematic / trailer-style videos. Black bars, intense music, etc., I want my videos to accomplish two things. One is to look and feel like a movie, and the other is to get my audience's heart pumping. Your brand is you. Show who you are through your edits.

As a video editor you have all the essential videos to create your own marketing video. If you are struggling with creating a portfolio try take 5-10 seconds from your favorite edits. Compile these into one video that showcases all of your talents and skills while captivating your audience. For example, watch Sam Kolder's "2016 My Year." This video was well ahead of its time, but you can see all of his unique editing styles and amazing ability to piece together a plethora of different videos all together that was quite engaging. This inspired me and towards the end of each year I create my own version of a "My Year" video compiling all my footage and creating a story about my year that I use for marketing myself. It works quite well

Build a professional portfolio showcasing your best work. Include a variety of projects to demonstrate your range and expertise. Consider creating a personal website or using platforms like Behance, Vimeo, or YouTube to display your portfolio.

Creating a video editing portfolio is crucial for showing your skills. It displays your creativity and versatility. Organize it by themes or types of videos, like short films or commercials. Include descriptions for each project to explain your role and challenges faced. Your portfolio isn't just a collection of work; it's how you show your talents to potential clients and collaborators.

Identify a specific niche or style within video editing that sets you apart from others. This could be a particular genre, theme, or industry focus. Specializing can make you more appealing to clients looking for expertise in a specific area.

Your style will develop itself over time. You'll naturally start to find it when you let go of overthinking and simply start creating what feels best for you. After a handful of edits, take time to go back and watch your videos again. After we detach from our edits, we can start to see them differently. Notice what you like most about them. Do you see any consistent skills or styles you applied to several edits? That's the start of your style, continue to grow it. Make sure it authentic to you.

Each has unique features and a learning curve, but the choice ultimately depends on your requirements and comfort level. Transitions enhance flow and visuals, chosen based on tone. Colour grading is vital, using tools like colour wheels, curves, and LUTs. Music, overlays, and text animations add life but avoid overuse. For business editing, prioritise brand identity and message, targeting the audience's preferences.

Another quick and easy way to connect and win jobs as a video editor I find is to actually show the client a relevant showreel. If they are looking for an editor to make a 2-3 minute snappy event highlights video there's no point in showing them your general showreel or your corporate interview work. Show them previous event highlights edits. I've had numerous experiences of reaching out for editors for certain edits and I have to sift through numerous random edits of an unrelated style or tempo etc. Potentially you can have many different showreels all based in different types of edits so you can pick and choose what to show each client so it stays very relevant.

If you don't share it, nobody is going to see it. The more you share it, the more of a chance you have to be hired. Outside of this, editing video in coffee shops has been quite helpful for landing new clients just passing by seeking interest in what I am working on.

Listen to the needs of the clients and the sale continues to be ongoing and the closing will be completed by a close understanding of the wants and needs and the activities that are appropriate will help to ensure that this is not a difficult decision for creating a good solution and it will always make sense for the client and establish a trust in the process to ensure that the best results in the process are met and achieved as quickly as possible because the best outcome is always a realistic outcome for both parties to be successful in achieving their goals and objectives.

If you are unsure of your value, ask each client after you complete a job what they liked most about working with you. Grab a testimonial. If your client was referred to you, ask them how they heard of you. The more you can gain into how others are finding you and why they are working with you, the more you can start to niche down your value and start amplifying it in your work and to generate you more work. You can later use this as part of your branding on your website, portfolio and other marketing materials.

Outside of client work continue to edit videos that inspire you. Sometimes those open more doors than paid work. Find videos that excite you to edit and have fun seeing what you can create with no attachment to an outcome. It is in this state that we let go of fear, doubt and judgement that our best work is created most authentically to who we are.
