What are the best ways to build and maintain a positive research team culture?

While defining clear goals and roles is a key step to success, building trust is what creates a strong and cohesive foundation for achieving those goals. Taking the time to know the team, acting authentically, and owning your mistakes helps build trust needed to create effective communication, collaboration, and teamwork.

For me it starts with the vision and culture of the company. The shared vision will bind the team together and will make people go inspite of challenges especially during the storming stage. The communicated and aligned culture will define the how of doing things.

Managing conflict and stress is particularly important to ensure a cohesive working team. Having lived through two significant corporate restructures in the last two years, which has amounted to close to 20% of the workforce being laid off, I have seen firsthand what stress can do to a team. The most effective tool I have found is repeated communication with my teammates about realigning expectations on deliverables to others in the organization. Setting revised expectations to key stakeholders as we level set new ways of working with reduced staff is extremely important. Additionally finding ways to reconnect with the remaining team is especially important. These steps will help keep the team engaged and on track.

Stress and conflict can sometimes arise in collaborative environment as byproduct of tight deadlines and difference in approaches or perspectives on problem. To reduce or eliminate impact of those it is important that alignment is facilitated between conflicted parties through leaders and that core problems are identified and resolved in parallel. Likewise, leaders can resolve many problems by coaching their team members about conflict resolution in calmer times, so they can apply them in more stressful time when they recognize applicable situation.

A team's culture is positive when it not only understands the supreme motivation of all of its members but also, on accomplishment of team goals all their members are also rewarded!! Recognition and rewarding for their efforts makes their feel valuable and team should always cherish their small small wins in order to motivate and flourish their efforts for the supreme team goal. This would not only motivate them, but helps in lighting the work pressure & stress but also helps in building a strong team bond.
