What are the best ways to balance creativity and budget in video production?

Young filmmakers need to remember that there many ways to get that difficult shot or setup your film so desperately needs. In the early 90’s I was hired to direct a music video for a small Latino record label. They wanted their singer to be filmed driving along the Sunset Strip, on a sunny day, in a red convertible Mustang, singing the song. That could be crazy expensive(block off Sunset, cops, extras, car on trailer, permits… crazy expensive for them, so I said, let me shoot it my way I went out used my credit card at Budget, for the Mustang, Gave her a walkie-talkie, she sang I had my assistant drive my Rabbit convertible, roof down, I stood up, shot it handheld, it cost only $100, the footage was gorgeous and I was a hero

There is always a solution. Creativity is the practice of solving problems. Limitations are a positive force for creativity. If you can't travel to location for a shoot, consider what visual assets you can obtain and produce without a visit. Hire local, produce remotely, and ask yourself: what can be done with another illustration method? Can't draw, but can you craft? There is always another way to solve the problem, whatever it is.

Build a process overtime. Every client meeting is data you can gather. Create systems of the questions you need to ask to ensure that before you go ahead you've collected all the important info. People nowadays like to go to meetings with a freestyle for 'authenticity'. That can be lazy. Be a great listener but still a facilitator of every discovery call, to ensure you get all the necessary information that will maximise the success of the process.

One thing to always keep in mind is that creativity will be your way to balance your budget and your expectations. Your creativity is a tool, not an obstacle. The best creatives are the ones who in the face of obstacles can turn a shotlist of 18 to a shotlist of 5. Your critical thinking and knowledge of filmmaking and/or money will be where you apply your creativity to find that balance. In essence, you need a great producer, director, and department leads.

Planning is one of the most important things you can do. Worked on short film that's been a bit of a passion project for roughly two years. Being adaptable meant starting big and being open to exciting ideas, I really wanted to use a high-end camera system for the shoot. When we started crunching numbers, it became apparent we couldn't afford to. We realized it was more important to not compromise on lighting, talent, and locations. So we went with a smaller camera system instead. For a client, this might mean working closely with your vendors to find out where to trim costs, which can be a delicate conversation. Maybe you don't need DIT...maybe you don't need two cameras, etc. maybe you have a longer 1 day shoot vs. a 2 day shoot.

Planning is crucial when preparing for a shoot. In my experience, creating a guide that includes all the necessary details, such as the time, date, location, and camera settings required, is essential. Developing interview questions beforehand and noting creative shots needed for the video is also helpful. This guide can be referred to while in the field, ensuring everything runs smoothly. Sharing this guide with your team of photographers or videographers before the shoot ensures that everyone is on the same page about production needs. Additionally, when planning a video shoot, finding inspiration is key. One way to do this is to look at YouTube videos created by videographers with a similar aesthetic to what you're aiming for.

It's always good to have a rain plan in place if you are shooting exteriors. Bring it up in your pre-pro calls, make sure you get buy-in from your client and they understand. And for revisions, I always try to approach this by laying out how many rounds of edits they will get as well as stating what additional rounds thereafter will cost them. Sometimes though, there are exceptions to this especially if the notes are minor...maybe you want to do it as a favor which might help grow your relationship with that client and build extra trust.

For example having a low-cost camera and filming but in the other hand using a professional editing software, could balance the quality and make the footage look like a movie and also having a industry level result. Or the reverse. The right editing as a result, is another important factor because it can make your video outstanding with lowcost footage or can make a video worse even having the best footage.
