It is like running a company, there is no way to build up a survey without having a clear vision about the best 'market needs/gaps'. Read first, think about what you've just read, identify potential gaps, build up a system (MVP, Survery, etc.) that helps you at assessing those gaps, deploy solutions.

It’s important to get mentors to give you directions. This makes the transition easier. Also, collaborate with other writers in the field. This gives you the opportunity to learn from them. Reading is also great way to learn from others. Read their works to understand how things are done.
