The best way to talk about your content strategy experience in an interview or a meeting with a prospective client is to: ★ Be confident ★ Explain your process (the why and what, but do not share the how!) ★ Site case studies of previous content strategies you worked on ★ Share success stories of content strategies you've created AND implemented - and share the data! If you do these things, the interviewer will know you understand the concept of a content strategy and what it entails to create such a strategy. Not all social media managers are strategists, yet often they are expected to create a strategy - or worse, work without a strategy in place! Working without a strategy means you have no goals!

In interviews, I quickly outline my content strategy experience, emphasizing key projects and their scale. I then highlight specific examples demonstrating my expertise and successes, like increasing engagement in a campaign or leading a content plan development. I discuss the strategies I employed, challenges encountered, and how I resolved them, effectively showcasing my problem-solving skills and impact. I tailor these examples to align with the prospective company's goals, illustrating how my abilities can contribute to their success.

Data talks, even in creative roles and whilst a good story can be effective, a good story with data that backs it up is invaluable to show the impact you had on a business.

Considering you've worked in a content strategy position before, you have applied a certain process to reap a certain result. That's what you need to put into words. Key points to mention: 1. Company or client you worked for and what they were struggling with 2. How you understood their needs and approached the content strategy 3. The implementation stage and one thing you learnt during that period 4. Results you got or didn't get and tweaks you made It's best to be humble when you're talking about results or case studies and show that you learnt something out of it and applied it immediately for best output.

There is no content strategy that doesn’t include some kind of failure. When you lean into those failures and outline: - How you spotted them - How you analyzed them - How you treated them - How you fixed them You’re articulating not only your diligence, but your ability to solve problems with content. Say why something didn’t work, why you thought it was valuable to focus on (and not simply abandon it), and then detail what action you took. Bonus points if you can prove, with various KPIs, if it worked and how.
