What is the best way to measure the quality of your organization's decision-making process?

Decision making process has to be applied through the suited decision making tools that organization has predetermined earlier. Those tools are so many: examples, the cost- benefit analysis, the factor-rating method, and the analytic hierarchy process. To assess the quality organizations have to put those decisions to the test, if the outcomes are satisfying then, continuous improvement, and updating are needed for the decision making tool. And lf it's not then the tool has to be dropped, in order for the organizations not to waste any more money or resources. In that case picking up a more suitable tool and maybe a combination of two or more tools togather that would align better with goals and satisfactory results has to be implemented.

Quality is a non quantifiable KPI in the decision making process. Critically assessing the decision making process in the organizational setup would facilitate in understanding the completeness and the overall impact. A well crafted decision making process including every nodes telated to the scenario and all the stakeholders related to the decision making process. For example a flat organizational structure would have few layers of DM process and they are quick when compared to a steep organizational structure. Therefore, assessing the current processes would highly contribute towards the measurement of the DM quality.

Measurable outcomes are a key element of any strategy. We generally employ KPIs to assess our progress and achieve milestones along the project timeline. But i am bit skeptical in associating quality with a KPI. Metrics are generally data linked with an outcome, e.g. Average ticket size per client. An increase in this metric could mean either number of clients has decreased or revenue has increased, neither of would always be attributed towards quality of solution or product. It could be marketing campaigns or competitive pricing e.g. Ryanair. As a rule of thumb, KPIs are essential to measure the progress of a project, that is why selection of a clear & specific KPI, that tells the real picture, becomes imperative.
