The most important thing a company must do to have a successful preventative maintenance program is recruit employees with good work ethic and expertise. an excellent program cannot be successful if it does not have the people that do the job. You have to look for people that are honest, collaborators, proactive, and self-starters (to name a few). This is easier said than done, but you can get a good sense of how people are by looking at how long they stayed at their resent job, how they answer questions in the interview, and how they perform their first 90 days. In my experience, I have seen both sides of the coin. A good manager can weed out the rotten apples.

The "how and when" of maintenance tasks has been highly documented and reviewed in many fields. Motivating technicians is often overlooked and is a sorely under addressed topic. Acknowledge consistency and quality in meaningful ways. Encourage mentorship between experienced and newer techs. When the social dynamics among tech teams break down or sour, your entire maintenance program can suffer.
