Also, informing learners (especially adult learners) at the start that they will be evaluated on the basis of these objectives is helpful in gaining their attention.

When students hit a wall in their independent online progress, there’s a toolbox available for small group instruction for the teacher to use with the most struggling students. Often, the lift is high for teachers to take this step. The best platforms provide more than just a worksheet of extra practice for the teacher to print for a student. While one e-learning product is not one size fits all, it is tremendously helpful when it has robust supplemental support. I imagine that enhancements with AI are on the horizon too!

The fourth step does demand some content to get started, but I prefer having the students find more content on their own or at least consider how the given content may apply to their current situations. This content (and these student responses) can be text, images, audio, video, animations, etc.

In e-learning, the content is the curriculum. As such, it should not be an afterthought. Make sure that whoever is creating the content has a strong pedagogical foundation, outstanding content knowledge, and experience working with learners at your target age level(s). Also, be strategic about how and when learner response to the content can be captured as assessment data, and consider how it can be used in an actionable way to improve the learning experience.

Also, consider how AI serves and supports a teacher with taking this step. AI is not the enemy, some of the tools give back teacher bandwidth and create new options for learning for students. Incorporating AI has massive potential. Obviously, do not simply Google “best AI tools in education”. Rather, look at that list and introduce it to the instructional team to learn together. Choose just 1-2 AI tools to try out for the school year.

Finally, it is time to implement your model. Hopefully, you had this in mind as you were developing the first four steps. If so, this step is easy. If not, there may be a lot of technical hurdles that have to be overcome at this point. Then, adequate training for the instructors and learners, depending on how different your model is from what they have become accustomed to.
