Mating is an essential step to define the position and orientation of your parts and subassemblies in SolidWorks. However, mating can also be time-consuming and tedious, especially for complex assemblies. To speed up and simplify your mating process, you can use smart mates and mate references. Smart mates are a quick way to create common types of mates, such as coincident, concentric, parallel, or perpendicular, by dragging and dropping parts onto each other. You can activate smart mates by holding down the Alt key while dragging a part. Mate references are predefined sets of mating features that you can assign to your parts or subassemblies, such as planes, axes, edges, or faces. You can create mate references by using the mate reference tool in the reference geometry command. Mate references can help you automate your mating process, by allowing you to snap parts or subassemblies together with a single click.
