Firstly understand why the problem needs to be solved. Most likely the solution will lie there. If you still do not find it think about how the problem could be addressed today without any new development. The workarounds will give you the solution. Always think about the constraints, and remember there is no one size fits all solution. Always keep your eyes open for a different solution and be ready to contemplate with that. Finally do not panic about the deadline. You would always succeed.

In my experience, really getting to the root cause of the problem is the key to understanding it. If you are jumping to conclusions without understanding what the real problem is, you will most likely cause an entirely new problem. One trick that I have always taught to junior developers is to ask "Why?" five times. Generally, you can get to a root cause if you ask "Why?" five times. This is an incredibly useful exercise to get to a root issue.

I guess this is the main phase where more time needs to be spent. It's better to use an RCA document or Post-mortem document and list down all the needed information captured from relevant stakeholders. The more time we spend here, the less time is needed to prepare the solutions.

I would always ask developers to come up with at least 2 solutions, it really helps people think through the problem and not make an impulsive decision. I think a lot of the time you when you come up with a secondary solution, you will get insight into possible problems with your first solution. Its just a good way to learn and not be impulsive. There is nothing more defeating than rushing to fix a problem, and creating another more serious problem in the process.

In my view, it's always better to develop a quick MVP with the potential to scale up later on. The solution must have the capability to solve the issue and most importantly it should be measurable over some time in case we need to alter it for a better cause or re-use in another application.
