Prep time is everything! What I mean by that is by doing research and sketching out rough ideas, you can begin to plan what tools you will need to create your vision. I try to create a mood board full of images or a folder with the collection of Gifs and clips that will help inform and inspire which route I would like to take. Each project brief is so unique, so prepping like this allows you to have that in the forefront of your mind while you play around with ideas, software and techniques.

It might be obvious but when you are in the throws of sketching/planning your idea out it is all too easy to lose sight of any order which may hinder your workflow later down the line. For example, in After Effects, color coding your layers and key frames can really improve your quality of life, especially if you want to tweak things quickly.

In my experience, it is important to block out your animation first before moving to the details. Working in large brush strokes down to the details allows you to work quickly to begin with. When adding the final details I advise to always think about where the audience's eye needs to be. And where you want to it go next. That is where you should focus on adding details/contrast/textures etc.
