There’s a thing called “Talkback” in every recording studio: an intercom used to enable sound engineers (or anyone else who’s outside and not recording) to communicate with people *in* the recording area.

See where the mind of the artist is before you start with audio capturing. Most artists like to be heard instead of being told what to do. Start with light conversation to establish common ground. Is the artist comfortable with receiving directions or are they more inclined to “lead”? If it!is the latter, consider framing questions in a manner that allows the artist a few choices. This works for Producers. Engineers may receive pushback. If there are too many poor performances in a row, focus on the area that was good. Play that part back to first. Then, suggest a few spots where they can punch in new performances. By giving them a choice, the feeling of control may help them get the performance that they initially hopped for.

My favorite thing to do is to ask the artist, "what are you listening to these days?" If there is something similar between their listening preferences and the themselves, point it out! A compliment goes a long way! Then, move on to specifics about what kinds of things should be focused on in the recording session of the day. I like to get in as many painless takes as possible. The most important thing is to have the artist genuinely feeling comfortable and free. You may need to manage a few moments of expression due to time constraints and budget. The most important things is to not get in the way of the artist and the flow that they share in their creative process.
