What are the best strategies for synthesizing literature review information?

I think the key issue these days is volume. There are too many papers now that for many topics a fully comprehensive review isn’t feasible. So, accept you can’t review every potentially relevant paper. You will need to triage the results of keyword searches from titles and abstracts. Only put the most relevant in your initial list or matrix. It’s more efficient to have a low selection rate from a big pool, than cataloging most results and becoming overwhelmed. Also, learn the advanced features of literature databases like Web of Science and Altmetric to make sure you capture all the key works in the area. You can also talk to colleagues and ask for their input. Better yet, divide up the work and put together a team to help you.

First of all understand your topic. Then use key words for search. Use those keywords to read into the articles. Then read the abstract and then methodology, know that you cannot buy articles so most of the time you have to work with abstract. Use a note, like one note or Evernote to keep notes and arrange them later. And for citations just cite from the Google scholar by clicking on the cited by. There you go. This can be applied to a scientific review as well. A blueprint of what the article is going to include is always helpful. It helps narrow down the work that isnt useful and ensures what facets of the work that is included should be highlighted.
