As a recruiter and manager this is a topic we deal with a lot. The first thing we see is that those companies that have HR related problems are often also those that have no idea where they come from, or in extreme cases what they even are. First step should always be to gather data on all the important metrics (hiring, retention, performance after X time, etc.), as well as some data to assess mood (interviews, surveys, audits, reports, etc.).

These are the questions I've asked myself in the past when assessing and prioritizing risks: 1) Is delaying this compliance audit going to have an immediate financial impact, long-term or no financial impact? 2) If we need to hire 300 staff in the next quarter and have limited staff to onboard the group, what risks do we face? 3) What immediate data loss risks are we facing should we choose to change our HRIS platform?

Once you know if and where you have HR related problems you must develop a plan to take action. The data you have gathered will be crucial here, oftentimes HR issues, especially retention, can be multi-faceted and not have a clear solution. Analyse your data and develop a plan that is clear and implementable.

I have often observed that much of the planning and implementation of risk management is focussed on one person.
