What are the best strategies to encourage creative thinking in children?

Start telling a story and let them continue it. Every now and then throw in a new character, an unexpected event or challenge the path they're on.

When I settle in with my kids at night. I'll go through their backpacks, read their daily reports (not always good), look through their returned work, empty out rocks (gems) or random items they have stuffed in every pocket. I have learned instead of asking them "How was school today or what happened with this!?" I ask them if they made any new best friends today? This helps lead into sometimes a bad report for talking to much with friends today. They open up with this simple question. I ask them what was one kind or unkind thing they witnessed that day. How can they be kind the next day or fix the unkindness? Maybe someone needs a new kind best friend. The random items in their backpacks always an adventure!

As adults, it's important not to inhibit, minimize, or dismiss children's imaginative minds. Engage in children's natural ability to "play" and "imagine" alongside them, encourage them to follow their curiosity and interests, and nurture creative expression.

Responsabilidades y retos! ellos deben por sí solo hacer y resolver de la forma que puedan sus actividades, tareas, juegos y retos, hay que llevarlos a que ellos pueden y no hacerles todo, siempre que el tutor asuma el rol de, te explico cómo y tú puedes, yo te guio, apoyo, ense?o, pero, eres tú quien lo haces. 2. y si yo aprendo de ti?: Actividades, juegos, retos, donde cambiemos roles y los pongamos en el papel de que ellos nos ense?an. 3.Música-instrumentos: Soy fiel creyente de las grandes ventajas que los ni?os aprendan un instrumento musical, el que ellos elijan, pero les dará un arma muy poderosa en la creatividad.

This is a MUST in every activity in my class. After working on a specific topic in their book or writing, I set up some games as an "evaluation" of the lesson to see if they have any doubts or questions. It can be through free-play games, letting them explore the materials with simple/basic instructions, online games, or playing mini-teachers in small groups where they work together.

We tend to forget that learning does not start and end in the classroom. As a child a lot of what I learned came from simply playing with my older brothers. Going on adventures with them and learning from their experiences. Creativity is the use of imagination to create something. The wider your scope of reference is the greater is your scope of imagination. So, giving a child a diverse set of experiences gives them a wide varity of possibilities to work with.

The simple question of "what did you like or not like about that experience?", is the starting point for critical thinking. Inspiring children to actually assess what they are feeling and why, is the impetus for individual creative thinking. Any question that gets children to assess their own thoughts and emotions, instead of regurgitating the input they have been fed from those around them, starts the process of self analysis and opens doors to critical thinking and the ability to generate creative solutions to problems posed by the world around them.

Also, another MUST. Something that I love to do is always innovate and change the course of my lesson plans, and activities, as well as change the routine as many times as I can. I think what my kids loved the most was having activities outside the classroom, playing, having different classes, and exploring beyond the classroom. Also, I realized that this potentially increased their creativity and imagination, they were motivated and engaged the whole time.

Match their excitement! If a child is genuinely excited about something, the best way to encourage continued development in that area is to mirror their level of excitement. If a child tells you "Check this out !", reply with "That's awesome!, Tell me more".

Permitirles ser ni?os va de la mano con los aprendizajes por errores, con esto no quiero decir que permitas que vayan por la casa corriendo con un cuchillo, pero, jugar con tierra, agua, comerse algún insecto, etc., son base fundamental del verbo "ser ni?os". Explorar el mundo siempre será la mejor manera de estimular sus ideas, no solamente decirles "esto se puede" o, "esto no se puede".

Actively listening to children and helping them fine tune their idea through conversations helps the grow their creative mind as it lets them see things in new lights.

Collaboration indeed fuels creativity by exposing children to diverse perspectives and approaches. Según mi experiencia, acompa?arles durante sus momentos de mayor estrés y/o angustia, ayuda a que, al finalizar dicho episodio, podamos hablarles con calma y comenzar un ejercicio de escucha reflexiva. Validar sus emociones ayuda a que el vínculo que se tiene con ellos sea más fuerte y, a su vez, aprenden a confiar en su guía/tutor.

Lo más importante en estos tiempos si son menores de 12 a?os, es mantenerlos lo más alejados posible de las pantallas, quizas una hora a la semana podría ser la concesión. De los 12 a?os en adelante, hay que controlar los tiempos, quizas 2 horas diarias. Hay que estimular la madurez de la corteza prefrontal, darles la oportunidad de aburrirse porque es ahí cuando la creatividad del ni?o se despierta de forma natural.

Get children into the world. The more senses you can engage in experiences, the more they will develop the ability to pay attention to what is going on in the world around them. I have witnessed too many children glued to screens over the years. The ability to problem solve and become self sufficient is critical to young minds developing into powerful critical thinkers. Bottom line... Garbage in - Garbage out.

There is a gap between what one fantasizes & what they produce as a creator. A creative journey is to understand that gap, & how one emotionally respond to that gap. A great way to encourage art is to focus on how things work vs art for a outcome. Does one want a perfect painting or does one want to understand how shapes work together, or how shading can create depth? Grading a child on good art vs bad art might be stifling to one with a big gap between what they fantasize in their mind vs what they can produce. It does not matter if it resonates with others unless one is looking for compensation or validation. That said creating art sometimes feels better with an admirer or two, like a musician playing alone or for a crowd.

Give them an abundance of free time for quiet self reflection allowing them to become so bored that they seek creative activity. Don’t overstimulate their minds but allow them to seek out adventure on their own!
