Part of ghostwriting is shapeshifting into who you are writing as. That means you have to know your stuff, either by being an expert in that area, or having the research skills to become one. Whilst you might be an amazing writer in your own voice and niche, ghostwriting is a completely different ball-game, so the best thing you can do is research!

Hone Your Writing Skills: Continuously improve your writing abilities, adapting to different voices and styles. Understand Client Needs: Learn to capture clients' voices and messages effectively. Build a Portfolio: Create a portfolio showcasing your range, even if it's initially based on personal or spec projects. Network: Connect with industry professionals, writers, and potential clients. Attend writing workshops, conferences, and join relevant online forums. Market Yourself: Use social media, blogging, and a professional website to showcase your expertise and services. Niche Specialization: Consider specializing in a niche to attract specific clients. Maintain Confidentiality: Uphold high standards of discretion to gain trust.

Become an expert: invest time in mastering the subjects you aim to cover. Read, study, dig deep into them. The more you build your expertise and create around a certain topic, the more you'll be associated and remembered for the content you excel at.

Listen. Listen to the person or company you're writing for, listen on social media, listen to current events, listen to the language and jargon people are using and understand where it's coming from. Find unique ways to capitalize on interconnectedness - striking the balance between being relevant and distinguishing your leader or brand in a unique way. You need to negotiate contracts in two directions. With your client, and with any publisher. Spend extra effort reading and understanding every word of any contract given to you. And spend extra time crafting a great statement of work that is clear for your client. It will solve a lot of headaches in advance. Buyer beware: contracts don't make great friends. So there's a middle ground that might work best for all parties, where you stay out of the land of legalese. Good luck! And consult a lawyer. (There are great inexpensive services out there now.)

Ghostwriting allows you to grow in so many ways such as learning how to change your tone, gaining experience on how to write for different industries, understanding complex terms and concepts from various industries. That kind of gives a feeling of learning on the job and also doing your own research to fully understand the task.

The great thing about ghostwriting is you can take on a different role and voice in every single project. That gives you so much space to experiment, learn and grow as a writer - you might even uncover a new speciality that you wouldn't have otherwise! Get to know your client’s leadership style and business insights, but also their world view, how they like to spend their free time, learn what they are passionate about, their challenges, doubts and insecurities. Contribute to filling those gaps and making them feel more confident and empowered with the content that you co-create.

Having the necessary skills to navigate writing frees up your time for creativity. An example is using AI to create outline, get broad ideas, edit etc . This not only speeds up the writing process but helps you concentrate in doing the actual thinking and writing.

What's really being said here, is that ghostwriting is one of the toughest paid writing gigs there are. First, you have to be a total chameleon: able to adopt voices and styles as easily as donning a new hat. Then, you have to have an incredible eye for detail, and be able to "fix" any problems with flow, including coming up with fresh ideas you're prepared to give away. Which brings us to the other major issue: you must be willing to let others take all the credit for the work YOU do. You must be willing to let someone else put their name on your work. Good ghostwriters typically get paid well for this, but they're a rare breed. I, for one, respect them for this.

As with any job, there are a myriad of challenges that will come your way. In ghostwriting, the most common problem is managing the administrative piece. The time you spend sending proposals, jumping on discovery calls, and answering client questions all have to factor into your pay rate. At first, I didn't account for these items and ended up working for weeks at a time without pay. An important lesson: don't let your pipeline run dry, even if you're workload is full. Keep having calls and keep working the marketing at all times.

One of the greatest challenges is having to deal with clients who request multiple and extensive revisions. It is vital to set limits at the offset about how many revisions you are willing to do, whether that is two, three, or more. Otherwise, you could fall into the trap of spending too much time, money, and energy editing work you thought was done and dusted. Once the final manuscript is submitted, you can also set a deadline by which the client should get back to you if they want any further amendments. The trick is not to stretch that deadline out for too long (10 days is my max) because you don't want to find yourself having to correct past work three months later.

Find the time that works best for you in terms of creative output. I work much better in the mornings, and take a late lunch. I know I am sluggish and slow to get in touch with my creativity after lunch, so I build my writing around my own rhythms.

Portfolio building is complicated when you're a ghostwriter. Many clients will request (or demand) that you keep their identity private. Here is what I've done to navigate this situation: -Create PDF copies of the articles you ghostwrite, remove the client's name but still list the publication it was featured in. Allow people to access those PDFs from your website. -Ask your client to endorse you for skills related to ghostwriting (but not ghostwriting), such as editing, content development, and content strategy. -Publish content under your personal brand name, i.e. write for yourself. ;)

There are still opportunities for personal creativity and expression, but that cannot be at the expense of keeping your client's preferred voice and accomplishing your client's objectives.
