The biggest mistake I see is that people are mainly looking at search volumes without analysing keyword difficulty or relation to topic. Sometimes even very low volume keywords can make a big difference if they are highly relevant with less competition behind. Also, don't get confused by keywords with 10-20 or even zero volume. Use them if they are highly relevant and boost them with additional PR or Marketing activities. This can increase awareness for these low volume keywords and can uplift volume.
