What are the best practices for using digital communication to improve your brand's reputation?

Ensure that your brand is communicated consistently through all digital media. This creates a consistent and reliable image and aids in increasing brand recognition. Establish credibility with your audience by providing them with facts, tales, and behind-the-scenes looks at your brand. Encourage participation by taking an active part in two-way dialogue. React as soon as possible to mentions, messages, and comments. Recognise both favourable and unfavourable comments. Take control of your social media presence. Select platforms that are compatible with your industry and target market. Maintain a regular posting schedule, interact with fans, and use social media analytics to hone your approach.

The first & foremost task for any type of marketing communication is defining the Objective & then mapping your TG with whom you want to communicate. So how do we map our mission: want fame? Paint our story on social media, blog like a boss, or podcast our vision. Are leads the Jam that we are looking for ? Fuel up with email rockets, launch webinars like a pro, and build landing pages that convert like magic. But wait! No aimless spacefaring here. Know your audience! Are they Insta/TikTok trendsetters, LinkedIn VIPs, or chill Redditors? Speak their language, share their laughs, and solve their problems. With clear goals, a stellar audience, and genuine engagement, your brand reputation will shine like a supernova!

Defining goals and audience involves understanding your brand’s unique value proposition and the specific demographic you aim to engage with. For an FMCG company, goals may revolve around increasing brand awareness, promoting new products, or driving online sales. The target audience could range from health-conscious individuals for organic product lines to budget shoppers for value items.

Whilst audience is highly variable whether you're B2B, B2C and drills down further to the kind of product you're promoting, at the end of the day it's still B2P (Business to Person). Always keep in mind that there's an actual person who's attention you need to capture while you define the various ways you're going to get your message in front of them, its more than just one post and done, plan for at least 8 to 10 individual touch points using a variety of media and formats.

Building a brand is all about consistency. Knowing your customer is part of the solution, and finding a voice is vital to communicate out messages that will be heard by your audience. Communicating should be a two-way street, where answers are provided to questions that haven’t been asked yet - in a way that continues a conversation. That sounds oversimplified, especially if you have to “find a voice” to sell a product to the 14-18 audience, and you’re in your forties. I’ve been learning so many new words and lingo…. It’s been fairly bussin’, and my daughters think that’s sus.

Choosing the right channels and tools is critical. Given the broad consumer base of FMCG products, a multichannel approach is often most effective. Your prospective customer could be on every social media channel there is, but always keep in mind your company brand and whether its appropriate for your company to be there. Not every company needs to be on every social media channel, choose your platforms with careful consideration. My Personal favourites are utilising the power of video across multiple platforms, from Linkedin Posts, to then promoting those posts, Youtube and hosting the videos on the website within articles, and Spotify for our podcasts. Here I'm covering my bases, whether people are in the mood to read, watch or listen, all in the hope that the content is "Thumb stopping" enough for them to stop scrolling on which ever channel they've chosen.

It's highly likely that individuals seeking more information about your brand, including insights into its reputation and authentic customer testimonials, will conduct a simple Google or Bing search. Consequently, it's essential to establish an effective customer review management system, which may involve utilizing third-party platforms like Trustpilot or Google My Business. Additionally, consider exploring YouTube as well for specific product reviews/unboxing or any other type of content.

Picking the right digital communication depends on the type of industry. In pharmaceuticals, people prefer using WhatsApp more than email. But, don't forget, email is still useful, especially for things like sending newsletters. The more touchpoints a brand can connect with TG, the better awareness

Creating relevant and engaging content is about crafting messages that resonate with your audience’s interests and needs. For an FMCG brand, this could mean sharing quick recipe videos using your products, posting user-generated content to build community, or informative blogs that position your brand as a thought leader in sustainability if that aligns with your brand image. The content should always aim to inform, entertain, or provide value to ensure engagement and foster a positive brand reputation.

Personally I feel like Video is massively powerful to disperse a message. It can then be readapted to article form with Photos, or broken down into smaller bit size clips. Don't be afraid to test different types of content to find what resonates well with your audience, people see 100's of brands every day with plenty of unmemorable content. Ultimately you'll be measuring and learning from the data and insights of which ever platform you choose or the analytics of your own website. If you're not seeing the results you need, then switch it up a bit, when something becomes truly memorable, you'll see it in the numbers.

We're no longer in a world where marketers can stick their finger in the air and guess the wind's blowing. Every action your brand takes, every post, video or podcast has to be measurable. Of course, all while maintaining the privacy wishes of your audience. As a digital marketer you'll have a medley of platforms you use in your tool belt and you understand that your prospective customer is on a journey. While they might show up at the different check points you need to be able to see how they got there, so cross platform measurement is key.

No matter what level you are at, there are always valuable bits of wisdom that you know. Additionally, connect with others that are in the niche that you belong to or are interested in getting in. Providing a nice service or a product isn't enough. Getting their feedback without giving a salesman type vibe helps to express their true experiences about your brand. This helps to develop a friendly relations with your brand name.

One thing that works well in digital communication is connecting genuinely with your audience, not just sharing information. I disagree with the idea that digital communication is solely about delivering messages. It's equally vital to build trust by acknowledging your audience and transparently addressing issues. For example, brands that appreciate their audience and handle issues transparently not only build trust and loyalty but also maintain a positive brand reputation in digital communication.

Consumer perception is the essence of our brand reputation, and social media, as a channel can be used quite effectively to both cultivate, and monitoring our brand reputation. So to improve the customer delight, or for brand positioning, or in cases of brand crisis, social media could be the first response channel. Important is your efforts should seem authentic and not appear synthetic. For eg. if you're growing a brand story that seem great to you, but your TG couldn't relate with it, the problem isn't so pressing, or part of their real life issues, then your story won't produce impact you desire. In crisis mgmt, attend the tiniest detail, and respond like a real person, and unlike a corporate spokesperson.

It has been rightly described in above 6 points how you can roll out your digital campaign in correct manner & understand the ROI. However nowhere it is considered that success of digital campaign is equally dependent on ATL & BTL promotion of the brand . Based on research it is found that only digital campaign could’nt create impact for many brands since they could’nt cook the recipe of marketing mix . It is evident that big on line giants are using legacy media .The story is -brand keeps a different media agency for digital campaign & they will pitch their story which might have synergy conflict with the mother campaign . So if you want to have a successful digital campaign , you should have strong harmony with proper marketing mix.
