What are the best practices for using CC and BCC in an email?

I've set up a rule in Outlook that automatically moves messages where my name is in the Cc box to a folder named "when I have time to read this".

You have just given me the best reason to use BCC, to prevent reply-all. I did not use it because staff will double check CC list that their co-workers or someone in another group received the email then asked me to add them. That is a plus to stop reply-all. Thanks.

I view the To: As you have an action item in this email. Cc: is an FYI need to know. Too many of us can feel the need to cc the world or have way too many persons in the TO: myself included.

If someone makes an email introduction of some sort, after thanking them, I'll move them to BCC (and tell them) so that they're not inundated with what's most likely a new conversation moving forward between the newly connected people.

In my experience I have made the mistake of using CC incorrectly to share a decision.
