I personally against extensive user testing of the brand really. Mostly because none of visionary brands did ask their TA if they like what they do. They shaped the perception and what people liked. You must study your target audience and know their insights very well in order to deliver a brand that speaks to its audience. Talking too much with the audience will result in mediocre creativity. In my experience, a brand needs one seemingly simple yet tricky in practice thing: a design intent to evolve. From that basis, a brand has its best foot forward, as “it” (in and of itself) doesn’t know what “it” is yet! If we're talking Branding or identity design it's simple - don't. Don't user test. The last thing you need when it comes to branding and identity design are conflicting opinions from a large group of people. It'll unnecessarily complicate things. Best practise is to keep it to a core group of key decision makers - people who's opinion you trust - and make the decisions from there. Often it can be hard to decide on your own, but anymore than a group of 5 or so people and it starts to become design by committee, which is a sure-fire way of ending up with a mediocre brand identity.
