What are the best practices for training a new team member in merchandising?

To get maximum output from new comers it is always needed to set a clear pathway and growth plan for them so that they can be turned in to an asset for their organisations!

One thing I found helpful is to understand the potential of the new member to fit in the missing pieces of the team. Goals and expectations are easier to set then.

Before setting the goals and expectations, new comer to be evaluated for skills required in particular to the Company's systems and work flow. Will also need to know the level of knowledge he/she has and what's really needed to perform. Will need to spend few days into training the processes and giving necessary conceptual knowledge to prepare the newly hired team member to start working with least possibility of failures.

Here, it requires a strategic approach to ensure they understand the principles of merchandising, company processes, and can contribute effectively to the team member. One should start with - Familiarize Them with Company Values and Brand Image, provide detailed product knowledge, explain in detail the store layout and design, provide hands-on training, inventory management, communication skills and customer focused, merchandise tools and technology and lastly feedback and evolution. Please remember, the key is to create a comprehensive and supportive training program that addresses both theoretical and practical aspects of merchandising while fostering a sense of teamwork and commitment to the company's goals.

Sometimes (often) we are blind to what is simple and what is "known to all". So. Hands on and with SMALL pieces at time. Too often we explain things in a way where some details are not mentioned at all.

There are general merchandising techniques and then categorized merchandising. So it's better to train on relavent category and show some other brands merchandise and their outcomes.

I found several instances where the new team members are self-rejecting without giving it a shot! But you only get more confident when you take the charge! You can always get help if you are not afraid to ask for help ??

As per my experience clear Instructions, task demonstration, step by step guidance, encouragement, support availability anytime, progress check, variation in task to them and feedback is all required. By following these steps, the task assignment process becomes a valuable learning experience, helping the new member build competence and confidence in their merchandising responsibilities.

Encourage also for new member to give feedback to others as that is crucial in any team to build up honest and productive dialoque.

I've found my trainees have fallen into two broad categories: Planners who are more comfortable having the visual documents on hand for constant reference as they ask me to walk every fixture and faceout (twice), and Painters who gleefully start grabbing stacks and moving styles around like so many Lego blocks stopping only long enough to see me nervously pointing at the visual guide. For the former, I assure them that merchandising is less of a graded test and more of a curated art presentation; there's no wrong way to start, you just improve with time and feedback. As for the latter, taking some extra time to explain the logic behind brand visual standards and current marketing strategies helps get quick buy in. For me, anyway. :)

I think real life experience provides actual evaluation and feedback. Real tasks need to assign to the new team member and then need to review how he/she performs.

For me all the 5 points as mentioned are important and go hand in hand. If any of the steps is missed there are chances that a new person may be unable to perform up to the expectations. In my perspective the steps are : Set goals and expectations and then demonstrate using your experience how to proceed in achieving the goal. During the process assign tasks to the person not only within the function but cross functional. During the training process provide continuous feedback and at the end evaluate. It is important to remember, if the new comer fails to meet expectation,manager also needs to be questioned. Before evaluation, feedback needs to be taken from both the new comer(on how he was guided) and the manager(on guidance provided).

Let them watch, shadow more experienced team members, and get involved in vendor discussions and negotiations. Real life experience is as important to success as the technical aspects of the job. It is also important to remember that building good habits takes time, which cannot be substituted by anything, so be patient and good things will come.
