The best practices for staying up-to-date with materials science and material selection trends is to go wide, go deep. What I mean and agree with @Farhad is subscribe to Materials Today which creates beautiful graphics that somehow teach while being artistic (when I use to get the physical copy) and go deep by reading a magazine in a discipline you enjoy like Aerospace America. Turn your thoughts, insights, or ideas into an application that you write down somewhere. Then use the articles you're reading, oneline engagements, or conversations you're having in these associations to test the assumptions your application idea. This way your up-to-date "ness" is grounded in an actionable activity with value that reflects you.

At my workplace, we're devoted to continually developing new products to solve vexing engineering problems. Some unexpected results from our experiments have let us create new products. Our marquee product Ganzkuhl Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling Coating was a result of one such experiment and today it is helping us cool the roofs of buildings, sheds and even automobiles. Also, nothing beats the thrill, the intrigue of making a new discovery.
