The most common type in use that I have seen and recommend are the MFA apps for mobile devices such as by Microsoft, Google, Octa, etc. Many of the apps have an optional biometric security for even accessing the app, giving yet an additional layer of security.

While VPNs have been an industry standard for a long time, they do still have limitations to the level of system security, as they can still pass malware from the client computer to the host system if other security measures are not implemented and enforced. virtual remote desktops (such as VMWare or AWS) and secure local desktops are gaining traction as they can be configured on the host network to allow access to only what the end use needs.
