What are the best practices for scaling educational innovation across a district?

There has to be a focus on the problem. If the innovation or change doesn’t solve something for teachers it will not gain traction or support

I am extremely passionate about innovation in Education. One of the strategies that worked well for me in the past, as a grant recipient of a multi-million-dollar grant, was to take applications from teachers all over the district, and give away grants to teachers who had innovative ideas for furthering engagement and STEM education. The leadership team was able to see gaps in the current educational models based on the feedback the teachers brought, and we were able to offer grants that empowered teachers to fix the problems they were on the front lines fighting.

Acknowledging the problem and its solution is crucial it's the real heart of the matter. A pivotal aspect of this journey lies in consistently and purposefully executing the devised plan every day. By instilling this intentional commitment, staff members are more likely to wholeheartedly embrace the innovation, steering clear of perceiving it as a just another program or model destined to gone within a year.

Educational Leaders are supposed to have an entry plan when taking a new position. This concept is an important step for making success of the appointment. Until one knows the lay of the land, it is impossible to know exactly what is needed to make a success of the position and to positively impact the setting. Today in education, the pendulum is swinging harder to the side than it has in the past. What is clear is that many are looking for answers and there are many out there selling the next best thing! But what if the answer is to build what works best for the student in your own school and or district? What if it is a blend of multiple approaches? What if the experts within your own walls can build and engineer what education looks like in your community? Be eclectic in your approach. Train teachers to create and curate lessons based on the needs of children. What would you do with your own child? What do you wish your own teachers had done?

A joint partnership between the Global Partnership for Education and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), to facilitate a cross-national, multiteam, design-based research and professional support initiative called Research on Scaling the Impact of Innovations in Education (ROSIE). The core here is intentionality, it's the key to ensuring success.

The most effective training for advancing educational innovation is incredibly practical. By providing clarity into how change is made and what success looks like, we provide a roadmap forward. Impactful ways to scale educational practices include: - Sharing 1-3 minute videos of strong teaching - Creating strong lesson plan examples - Studying student work to create clear next steps for learning

I developed a community of practice (CoP) at my site to support interdisciplinary team leaders as we implement teaming practices across our school district. I found that team leaders wanted support, and they also wanted the agency to choose how that support rolled out. As I listened to their feedback and suggestions, I was able to ensure that the actions of the CoP honored where they were in the innovation process. This built trust in the CoP and modeled how they could build similar trust and agency within their own teams of teachers.

I would say community engagement and fostering flexible learning environments are pivotal for successfully scaling educational innovation across a district. I would suggest a collaborative approach where the community plays an active role in shaping the educational landscape. It's crucial to celebrate and engage stakeholders, particularly parents, in the journey. Through our experience, we've discovered that ongoing celebrations within our process not only validates the hard work being done but also empower parents to appreciate their students' growth. Recognizing and celebrating these small wins isn't just a formality, it shows that the team is making a noticeable difference!

An example of a successful way to share innovation in education is through practitioner networks or professional knowledge communities.

Often, education leaders like to ride upon one specific buzz word signifying an innovation (digital transformation, AI, remote learning, blended learning, etc.). Then they try hard to set it as the standard across all constituents to remain consistent. The one thing I found useful is to keep in mind that one-size-fits-all is not what you can use when it comes to scalability of innovations. Not all the problems faced by all the audience segments and stakeholders can be solved with one solution applied in a consistent manner. A powerful innovation can't be applied without equally strong creativity. Thus, when scaling innovation across a larger canvas, stay ready to be creative and flexible and downplay the emphasis on consistency.

Innovation in education should adopt cultural approach rather than going organisational approach. Any sort of process or structure which does not cater to grassroot can never be genuinely replicated over a vast territory. Furthermore, adding up ethnic elements to it can make it more authentic.
