From my personal experience I’ve found these to be the best practices: Empower Others: Delegate responsibilities and give people the tools they need to succeed. Empowering others fosters collective ownership and enhances the team’s ability to lead. Effective Communication: Be clear, transparent, and open to feedback. Effective communication ensures alignment and builds trust among group members. Lead by Example: Model the values, ethics, and actions you want others to follow. Authentic leadership inspires others to take initiative.

One thing I’ve found helpful is allowing professional relationships to grow naturally. Relationships are not linear and require efforts from both parties. Being thoughtful and intentional when building professional relationships will result in an overall positive experience.

As a grassroots leader, you need to develop a range of skills that will help you plan, implement, and evaluate your organizing efforts. The one major key that accelerated my effectiveness as a community organizer, advocate, and activist was that I sought out good mentors. Mentors are people who have been doing organizing work for decades before I started. Some of my mentors marched with Dr. King. Others worked on peace issues. Others were economic justice activists. They were all different, but they all could teach me something. I made intentional steps to learn from them on a regular basis. Meeting with them monthly for three years was the key. I would make mistakes and fail. They would then help me find the lessons in failure and overcome the mistakes. Listening and learning from experienced grassroots leaders is how you become an experienced grassroots leader.
