What are the best practices for recognizing and rewarding your community leaders?

There are many different personalities in community leaders and you need to look for them. I split them up like this: - The Helper: helps with member questions & makes other members feel welcome - The Nerd: first one to answer questions, is very eager and kind of a "teacher's pet" - The Influencer: members with high popularity in their community & field - The Social Butterfly: extroverts who enjoy connecting members & helping them, hosting their own events. These member-personas will help you to more clearly define your leaders.

Recognizing and rewarding your community leaders isn’t rocket science, it’s about making them feel seen, appreciated, and keeping things fun. Here’s how I do it: - Give them the Spotlight - Public Shout-Outs - Share Their Journey - Make Them Feel Special - VIP Access - Cool Titles - Personal Touch, Always - Tailored Gifts - Handwritten Notes - Custom Awards - Help Them Grow - Leadership Training - Let Them Lead - Content Spotlight

We created an ambassador program within our community for this exact reason. I completely agree that these members are not necessarily the ones with the most followers, posts, or likes. An ambassador is someone who is committed to helping the community grow, who goes out of their way to support other members and make new members feel welcome :)

Time. The easiest way in my field would be free product, and whilst it elicits immediate but short lived positive emotion - to make someone feel truly valued you must invest your time into them. Be available, reach out, ask questions. People want to feel involved in a brand in a way that reflects their passion. They spend their time and money on you - you can at least pay the time back.

First you need to identify the potential community leaders in the company Talk with them and if they are a intrinsic motivated person support them with feedback . Important to give appreciation and show the importance of the community and added value brought to the company

In a recent podcast I listened to, the speaker discussed the core motivations that drive human behavior, ranking them in order of importance: Ideology: A powerful motivator as it aligns with personal beliefs and values. Ego: People are often driven by a desire for recognition and self-esteem. Reward: The anticipation of a positive outcome can be a strong incentive. Punishment: While effective, it's typically a one-time motivator due to its negative nature. The speaker emphasized that ideology and ego are the most powerful motivators, as they are self-driven and align with an individual's intrinsic values. In contrast, punishment is less effective over time, as people are likely to comply only when necessary.

There will be differences... BUT, most community leaders have two key motivations: 1. They care, and want to help. 2. They like being in the middle, linking people, and they like being know for being that person.

Their motivations can vary even if they're part of the same cohort or community. Pay attention to the initiatives they start, the conversations they engage in, and how they support others. Segmenting them into personas based on these motivations can help tailor your engagement strategies effectively.

Discovering that others have varying goals when joining your community can be disheartening but it is an opportunity to grow and pivot into niches you may have overlooked. Some join a community to build their personal brand, provide or extract expertise, engage with other like-minded individuals, and to feel a sense of "belonging". All are common motivations and can lead to a strong community. Don't move away from these varying motivations but push towards them and make changes to your community mission as you learn from its members. All things change, including communities!

Rewards... ugh. It's not rewards. Community leaders don't do it for rewards. That's the wrong way of looking at it. They do it for PROGRESS. To make things better. Give them more progress. That's the reward they want.

Community members join for connection, not just perks. Nurture those connections first, then add rewards like special swag as bonuses, not substitutes for community spirit.

I would exchange an award for additional funding for events in the blink of an eye, and I believe most community organizers would do the same.

Great insights. For instance, a leader motivated by growth might value exclusive training opportunities, while one driven by recognition might appreciate a public shoutout. Balance intrinsic and extrinsic rewards based on individual preferences, ensuring they're perceived as valuable and fair. This thoughtful approach to rewards can significantly enhance motivation and loyalty among community leaders.

It is important to take a moment to recognize the people with whom we feel comfortable sharing our victories as we navigate the ups and downs of life. These relationships are more than just spectators; they are our foundation, the pillars upon which we stand as we travel. While we're celebrating successes and major life events, let's take a moment to consider how important these relationships are. They should be cherished and honored rather than taken for granted. These ties are what give our successes depth and give the entire journey a genuine sense of purpose. A powerful force that increases the richness of our experiences is gratitude.

Monthly recognition of our top community contributors is a staple, but our reliance on community storytelling is the true magic. By showcasing how our community has positively impacted members' lives, we forge personal connections and amplify our brand's value. User-generated content (UGC) not only articulates the benefits of our services but also resonates deeply with our audience, making our message more authentic and compelling.

Make sure the members that go above-and-beyond feel appreciated for their contributions to the community! We have a #lets-celebrate channel to highlight members, share accomplishments, and thank these members!

A simple "thank you" ?? can go a long way. Publicly acknowledge leaders' efforts, express your gratitude, and highlight the positive impact they have on the community.

When you invest in the community leaders you invest in the community. You can: - Offer workshops on communication, conflict resolution, and project management. Provide access to relevant tools and articles. - Share their accomplishments and insights on the community platforms. Share their successes and insights on the community platform, giving them a wider audience and boosting their credibility. - Create a central location for resources, best practices, and templates. - Actively seek feedback and publicly recognize their contributions.

Make sure these community leaders have the resources they need to continue to be leaders :) Whether this is access to certain data, check-ins, getting their input on community initiatives, or offering exclusive learning/event opportunities :)

One of the best way to recognise Community Leaders is to empower them to be their own Agenda Game Changers; retooling and Skilling them on Citizens Engagement, Social Accountability, making them part of the Project or Program Implementing and Monitoring Team for sustainability, and selecting them to be Champions of emerging concerns, facilitating them to have interface with the Technical and Political Leadership as well as with Traditional and Religious Leaders to identify Community Problems, Causes and Solutions jointly; providing them with an opportunity for exchange visits to other setting and giving them the tools to hasten their work and recognising their contributions publicly and promoting their lessons and best practices.

Empower these champions to steer discussions and author blogs to feature their technical and tactical knowledge. I invite them to help host community office hours - their opinions are trusted by members.

Regularly assessing your reward system is crucial. Collect feedback and analyze data to gauge its impact. Involve your leaders in suggesting improvements, ensuring the system stays relevant and motivating. Adjust rewards to match evolving needs, keeping your leaders engaged and appreciated.

No need to have a reward system a community. This is generally a waste of effort. See my comments above for more on why that is :-)

Ensure that recognition efforts are inclusive & equitable. Acknowledge leaders from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, & roles. Celebrate the contributions of individuals who may not hold formal leadership positions but have made meaningful contributions to the community in other ways. Encourage peer recognition within the community by inviting members to nominate & recognize fellow leaders for their contributions. Peer recognition fosters a sense of camaraderie & solidarity among community members & reinforces the value of teamwork and collaboration. Seek feedback and input from community leaders on recognition and reward initiatives. Involve them in the decision-making process to ensure programs reflect values the community prioritizes.

According to my experience, when recognizing and rewarding community leaders, consider these best practices: 1. Public acknowledgment: Share their contributions through social media, newsletters, or events. 2. Professional development: Offer training and resources to enhance their skills. 3. Meaningful incentives: Provide rewards aligned with their interests. 4. Networking opportunities: Connect them with peers and mentors. 5. Involvement in decision-making: Seek their input and involve them in program improvements. 6. Celebrate achievements: Mark milestones with celebrations or awards ceremonies. Implementing these practices fosters appreciation and motivation among community leaders.

Really leaders don't want recognition, they want instead to recognise others. So the best way to recognise leaders, is to give them a chance to publicly recognise their team, their people, their community. This in turn gives the leader some recognition, and elevates their status.
